As Peter might say, “I sure hope one of you got this!”…To me, this seems like a very low price for such a beautiful charger, and as Peter often says, “just leave a bid”. I am one, for example, who thought this would be way out of my price range, but in retrospect, I could have done it. Of course I don’t expect anyone to state whether they won it or not, because that would require posting too much info about one’s bidding initials, etc, nevertheless, I just wanted to see if others perceive this the way I do - as a super good price for an intact objet d’art of such age, beauty and condition? What do you think would be its “retail price”?
An interesting mixture of design elements. I'm not sure I like it that much. Perhaps others felt similarly? Also, I think to be considered a charger a plate needs to get up to 12 inches, so this might be just under that, which would also bring a lower price.
Describing a plate as “large” when it’s only 28cn (10.25”) seems a bit disingenuous. I think the sale price was on the high end.
I have always felt that this is a great area for a beginner who wants to find something very nice from the 18th century for under a $1000. These non-armorial type plates show up quite regularly for reasonable prices. With some patience, a rather spectacular design will eventually pop up on sites such as eBay. They seem not to be a big target for fakers.
@william Yes, I totally agree about this being a great plate for a beginner! I’m not quite a beginner, but I would have loved it anyway. I just didn’t think it was within my price range.
It’s a beautiful plate with all the features that you would expect from high quality Kangxi.
Beautiful paste, thinned iron red,so pre famille rose with on glaze famille noir border decoration.
Combine it with cobalt wash and cracked ice gold enamelling to top it off.
Lucky person who won this.
Vic.
It is very nice and I see nothing wrong with calling it a large plate as some Kangxi plates are only 22/23 cms.
Charlotte you are correct, there is about 2.5 cms to an inch, 30 cms is just about 12 inches so this is not far off a charger and worth highlighting the size, in my opinion anyway.
@shine Thank you so much for your input Vic!
“Beautiful paste, thinned iron red,so pre famille rose with on glaze famille noir border decoration. Combine it with cobalt wash and cracked ice gold enamelling to top it off.” - helpful info in terms of knowing to know what to look for!
I really appreciate it, and I agree that the winner was lucky.
Charlotte, I am not sure I am the best person to ask, but !st Dibs are very expensive so it would be a fair amount more there, I am sure.
What interests me is, first, that looking at it on a large screen it looks more like a bowl or dish rather than a plate?
Also, picking up on what John said about the various elements, it is very japanese looking. In fact, I have recently seen a Japanese Imari plate (from around this period) with a fairly similar decoration. That makes me inclined to see this as Imari, but then when I look at the other panels, the green and black is also quite dominant on the eye.
All of which makes me wonder (and I hope someone can answer), does Famille Verte trump Chinese Imari or is it a matter of what you see first, like those optical illusions where some people see one thing and others will see something different. So this seller refers to the plate as famille Verte because that is the strongest impression he gets but equally one could call it Chinese Imari?
Are we all certain the plate is Kangxi? The foot appears to have an orange tint, suggesting iron in the paste, and also looks like the foot is slightly rounded.
Something also stands out to me …. The shiny surface…. Looks like a thick slip.
Finally, while not all enameled Kangxi pieces have it, but most I’ve handled have the ‘halo’ effect around the enameled areas. The shot showing the reflection on the basket would’ve an excellent way of showing the halos if there were any - but none show.
No, I am not 100% convinced it is Kangxi. It is very nice, but as mentioned before it has competing styles which seems strange.
I have just found this which looks very similar. The accompanying article says it was copied in the later 18th and 19th c.
