Picked this up today for the equivalent of $7 usd. I could see it was old, late 19th? But it has a very large bubble-like defect. What kind of effect does a defect like this have on the value? (Not that it would have been enormously valuable without the defect...).

Now that I look at it again, it seems the brown paint, or whatever it is, wasn’t even supposed to be included. It looks like this brown paint(?) just dripped on the vase, or more accurately, it spilled. Weird.

Hi,
It looks like underglaze Green which makes me consider China Liling Kiln, early 20th c.
I'm not sure of their various marks but it is a start.
Hi Shine,
I have these two Japanese tea ceremony cups. To me, the green is the same...that’s where I guessed the date from. You really think Chinese? I sort of assumed Japanese.

This turns out to be Korean also, and may have actually been worth a couple hundred dollars if not for that enormous defect...

Wow! That s a belter of a defect! What is it? Can you put some paint stripper on it or did it happen in the kiln?
Seeing as we’re doing Japanese here, anyone know what this mark is? It’s a modern bowl but very nice. I’m just interested.
Nic
Hi Nic,
I don’t know what caused the defect, but I think its original to the firing. I don’t think its removable. The glaze is gone where the brown bubbled or exploded out...or whatever happened.
I feel like I’ve seen that mark before, or ones like it. But don’t know what it is, sorry.
Best, Todd

Hi Todd,
the centre bit looks burnt, almost like lava or pumice? I think you’re right, it’s there to stay.
Nic
Nic, I think the mark on your modern bowl might be 三峰 (san1feng1, "three (mountain) peaks/summits")
This link shows a bowl with the same mark.
You can search for more with 三峰陶瓷 or 三峰瓷.
Hope that helps,
Craig
Hi Julia and Craig,
Thanks for the suggestions,
I sent the photo to someone I (vaguely) know who speaks Japanese. She says it’s ‘Sanpou’, which is the name of a Japanese manufacturer. They still produce Minoyaki ware which, as far as I can make out, is similar to transferware.
I checked out their website and it all seems to add up, so now we know! If they’re still producing then it’s likely we’ll come across it again on here, so good to know although not as exciting as it might have been!
Thanks everyone!
Nic
Parts of the decoration are printed (carelessly) - more common in 20th century cheapo pieces, I think. The vase looks very poorly painted, the foot is wrong (like whoever made it tried to make it look old) and the colours are inharmonious. That brown lump on the side is - there's no other way to say it - just awful.
