Or I could have this the wrong way around. This could be the older blue which would make it early Meiji. I am not confident either way as this is something I only recently encountered.

This is apparently the older under glaze blue according to a member of gotheborg. That was used between 1868 and 1875.
Can't work out if Vic's is the older or later blue.

Think the blue is pre the chemical blue of Gottfried Wagner. When this blue was first introduced in 1870 they had trouble diluting it to give shading however they did work out how to dilute it and achieve good shading affects so understand why Mark has questioned the blue. Based on the large spur marks and the pig bristle pin holes think your plate was fired in a wood kiln rather than a coal fired kiln. From the photo's I think I can see undulations and wheel marks in the body of the plate and the center area appears a little raised. Think Meiji pre 1870 Arita but the thing is that not all the Kilns managed to make all the changes at the same time and production using the old methods persisted for some time after 1870 in some places so could be after 1870. From my reading the kilns that made the changes quickly were the ones making very good quality export wares. Anyway it is a very nice large example sorry not able to give a more definate view on the date.
