Well, I’m back to civilization…. At least for a few weeks.
Even up in the mountains, I couldn’t help myself from doing a little shopping, so the few times I had internet access (thank you McDonalds!) I checked all the online want ad listings….AND I think I scored a good jade piece!
The jade alone is a good size, about 4” tall x 5” wide x 2.5” deep. I’d guess almost a pound in weight (300-400grams???)
Color is a very pale celadon… pomegranate is hollowed (maybe a small vase or incense holder?).
The wood vase is zitan, carved to match the pomegranate design, so I think original to the jade piece.
So, what do you all think,18th c.?
Hi greeno107,
Its difficult to appraise this vase simply by one image.
I would need high definition pictures and close up of said piece. In particular the birds head, beak and wings. Along with the leaves and stem. Finally a picture of the interior. I need these to try and determine if it's hand tooling or modern drill.
As for the stand. You know woods better than myself. Have you performed a acetone/nail polish test on it. It certainly looks like Zitan. But unusual if it was.
Overall based on the one image its highly probable to be genuine nephrite jade. Does the figure fit perfectly with the stand?
It's a very nice buy. I like it.
BTW it's a vase imo.
Mark
Here’s more close ups….
@imperialfinegems The interior is impossible for me to photograph because the opening is only 2cm x 1.5cm, but what I can say is that the pomegranate is nicely hollowed out (kind of like a good snuff bottle, and the side are translucent as the light easily passes through the fairly think walls.
Here’s a close up of the pomegranate on the zitan base…. The lacquer like surface that still shows the pores and texture of the wood is a tell take sign of zitan.
There are a few chips to the stand, tip of one wing, and perhaps a tip of a small jade branch…. Seems like ordinary ware given the intricate and thin details.
Oh…and, yes, the base is a perfect fit.
Hi greeno107,
Could you please provide me with a image of the birds eyes? It's the way the circles are done that can help me date it.
Have you tried the cotton bud test with acetone/nail polish. If the refine is a reddish colour outs highly probable to be zitan. Brownish black would indicate other.
I think the carving is highly probable to be nephrite jade. A large number of similar carvings were very popular during the late Qing period through to the republican period. Most were made from either serpentine or bowenite. Yours on the other hand is jade in my opinion.
If it was bowenite one would see evidence of white patches or blotches. Along with highly translucent areas.
Mark
How’s this?
I can’t find my acetone nor my denatured alcohol to test the wood. I’ll pick some up from my building tomorrow, but I’m fairly confident.
Hi greeno107,
Thank you for the additional images.
Based purely on the images I believe the carving is ftom the 19th/20th century.
My reasoning is the way the birds are depicted. Almost a mirror image. Along with the way the vase is done. Especially the opening with that lotus look.
I did try and find a similar example through my references to no avail.
Jade as you know is difficult to date purely on low-pixel images. Often modern day tooling is expertly hidden by way of high polish techniques.
Signs of modern carving include perfect circles and curves, chipping on the edges of the drill mark or lines. Along with stuttering. Where the drill has jumped.
This of course is just my opinion. Others may have different views. As the old saying goes. You can show a jade item to 6 collectors and get 6 different opinions. It's highly subjective.
The stand also looks very much late 19th century.
Hope this helps you out my friend.
Mark
Thank you, Mark!
I’ll try and confirm the wood of the base and search for similar forms of pomegranate vases. I had looked briefly without much luck.
Many thanks!
I found this today. I know it’s not jade labeled agate 18th century but had similar things. This is in Met museum.
