Hi everyone:
I have been looking for a contemporary piece of quail nephrite jade pendant for a while now (really like what it symbolizes) and finally found something on the market! I’m wondering if anyone could make some comments on its artistic value, and whether you think the piece is worth collecting. Although this pendant is not old, I still think it’s worth asking the question here as in China traditional skills like carving do pass on through generations and ancient and modern jade art share lots similarities. Thanks!
thanks!
Hi YZ Sun,
The carved pebble looks very much like the sought after 'mutton fat' jade prized by collectors today.
The carving style and quality looks good but the glare from the pictures makes it very difficult to see clearly.
I take it that this pebble is on offer by way of a retail outlet. Is this correct? If so can you ask the seller the origin of the jade itself? I ask this because it looks very much like Russian white jade. Russian white jade is much cheaper than the prized mutton fat. Russian white jade is a very distinct and bright colour. Almost like glass. Mutton fat resembles a frozen piece of mutton/sheep fat. Not a bright pure white but not grey either.
The better quality modern day carved pebbles are often marked by the maker etc. Are there any makers marks etc?
The seller is asking how much if I may ask along with type/origin of the jade etc? Are they known dealers of jade or other?
Are you looking for a specified white jade quail pendant or perhaps other? Are you looking for something you like regardless of the cost or are you looking for a possible investment material etc etc?
Mark
Hi Mark: Thanks for responding! Yes, the place is a fairly large store at a prominent location, reputable locally in Suzhou area known for jade carving craftsmanship for centuries. This piece is not done by a famous artist, but I feel the carving is delicate and it does look very well made.
My main problem with it is the price as nephrite jade value has gone way up over the years and this piece in particular is almost 2000 dollars. Unlike gold, the value of jade is more arbitrary so I’m sure if it’s really worth it...but China’s nephrite jade market is not doing well due to general economic downturns so jade prices are going down since last year— I feel it might be a good time to invest in a piece or two.
let me know what you think, Mark! I really respect your opinions!
My feelings my friend is that the price for this pebble is high. It is after all a retail outlet with expenses etc etc. I assume that the price is USD. I would not think this particular piece is a good investment at that price. If for whatever reason you had to sell it in say five years you would suffer a substantial loss. I am aware that for some reason modern day artists in China are sought after over older pieces even those made by unknown artists. The prices are two to four times the prices for older pieces or there abouts. I do not understand this. However each to his own.
I know you are looking for a carving depicting quails. These types of toggles (hand held finger pieces) were made in numbers during the Qing period in various styles and quality. Modern day artists who are known and sought after normally sign their works. I have seen numerous on offer by way of sotheby's here in Australia. Asking price was from memory about $2000 usd or there abouts. None of them sold to the best of my recollection.
If you are looking for a nice piece of jade either a toggle or other may I suggest viewing one of the major auction rooms like sotheby's. They do from time to time have smaller jade toggles that are either by modern master's or date to late Qing period. The prices of course do vary immensely depending on the design/other. I would rather buy a known artists work or an older piece rather than an unknown modern piece. But again that's me. If on the other hand you don't care about price/other and really love it for what it is. Then OK.
I have attached an off-white jade toggle I bought a few years ago from a USA auction. It features a chilong climbing bamboo. It has attached the prized agarwood wood beads. From memory I snatched this for $200 and was the only bidder. It is in my opinion a piece from 19th/20th century. I love it and use it all the time.
I will later post some pictures of modern masters toggles for your thought etc.

@YZ sun,
Pictures of two white jade (not Russian jade) jade toggles/other that were on offer by sotheby's australia in July 2019. The price asked was between $3500-6000 (both passed in). I do know the first one was offered later again at a different auction house at a much lower price. I did try and buy it for $350 (the open bid) but was outbid. I think it sold for $800. Please note the quality of the carving along with the colour.
Animals depicted in jade are always desired by jade collectors and other.
Russian white jade is not as collectable nor as expensive as mutton white jade. Whereas Russian green nephrite with black speckle is very desirable as it appears to be a bright jade almost reminiscent of imperial jade.
From what I could see from the bright pictures posted it is my opinion that the quality of the carving is average.
If you see something else that you like please feel free to ask etc. Always happy to help if I can.
Mark
