Among the unsold items of my local auction house I found this ivory Guangyin for a decent price. She is made from an elephant tusk and 25 cm/9,8" high. The carving is not of the highest quality, but as no parts are protruding, the Guanyin is undamaged apart from a little gilt loss. I like the facial expression and the restrained painting and gilding. The auctioneer who usually is right with his attributions says she's from Republic. There's a signature on the bottom that reminds me of Netsuke signatures. Could the Guanyin be Japanese instead of Chinese? Also the face is a bit dirty as can be seen in the enlargement. Any ideas how to clean it without affecting applied color?

Nice looking guanyin statue you are looking at.
It's 100% elephant ivory. Good size too. I think it is Chinese rather than Japanese. I think it's as you and George think that it's from the Republic period. It unlikely to be earlier than that because most chinese ivory from say from around 1900 was stained for effect. That was very popular at the time. Yours is very unusual with the gilt. Later ones say from the early PROC onwards tend to be plain with no staining etc.
The Japanese ivory tend to be very ornate at the base etc. Whereas the Chinese classically are plain.
With cleaning just a damp cloth with no chemicals at all. Store/stand it with a small thimble/other of water nearby. That way it shouldn't dry out or crack.
Hope you can get it at a decent price. Similar to this I have seen sell for anywhere between $1200-2500aud.

Thank you for your opinions and additional information, George and Mark. The Guanyin is already in my possession, I paid €250 for it, auction fees included. Thanks to my husband’s four aquariums we always have a good humidity in the flat, so I hope the crack in the bottom won’t get larger. I’ll try to clean the face with a wet q-tip.

Really good price you snagged it for there dear Birgit. Equates to about $410aud.
Had another look at it. I think it is beautiful and from very early republic period. Often similar sold as 19/20th century.
Hope you can find/decipher the name of the artist.

Hi Birgit,
Bit late to the party but just wanted to add my congratulations. Very nice item would not be surprised if and when you discover the the artist it proves to be a little older. The carving of the face is very serene and benign, later ones in my view tend to have a less expressive face more like a grin than a benevolent smile. The carver has also used the natural curve of the tusk to good effect.

Honestly Birgit, if I owned this piece, I think it might be my favorite thing. What a great acquisition. In one pic, she looks hunched over. From another angle she looks to be standing straight up. And in the posterior shot, she looks almost to be leaning backwards. Pretty amazing.

Thank you all for your favorite comments. You may laugh but I have welcomed the Guanyin in my home by burning an incense cone in front of her, according to her small size. (My large modern Guanyin gets the larger incense sticks)
It’s always a strange feeling buying something that nobody else wanted. It makes you think the price you paid was too high. But maybe there was just too much ivory on offer with the 300 netsuke and the Guanyin got overlooked.
Todd, I see what you mean, she looks different from each side. Although the carving is not as fine as on many others, I think the artist looked at the tusk and clearly saw the Guanyin in the form.
