Just been to the auction to look at a few things. Please can you tell me what you think of this base? There are two of these vases, one large one smaller. Both very similar. I assessed the small one (possibly wrongly!) as 19th c, but the larger one has a much more Kangxi footrim. But - it does have that dubious 4 character mark.
I have here two photos that I took. I will also post the ones from the website. The four-clawed dragon is not terribly well-drawn. Intitially, this lot (with several other 19th c items, most damaged) was estimated £30-£50. Since I have got home, it is now £100- £150.

By the way, I find the shape very 19th c. It is unlikely this is Kangxi, isn't it? The vases are different to handle. It was a well-priced lot, maybe the auction house has realised that and upped the price. I wasn't the only one looking at it.

These are both 'Kangxi revival' late 19th c,nice but fairly common.
Presuming these are at an auction house,by the time you add in Auction costs,v.a.t and on-line bidding it adds around 30% to the price.
Then there is shipping cost unless you can pick up locally.

Thanks, that is what I thought, although the base of the larger one is very much like a Kangxi piece I found last time. Maybe it is one of the other items that is attracting attention. It may be that it was an error in the original pricing as they have a plate very much like these vases in another mixed lot for the same amount.

I come a bit late to the party on these, but Vic and Staartmees are correct about their date. You mention an interesting aspect of the study of ceramics that can often slip between the cracks, and that is shape. You're right in what you say about the shape of these items. It's a very common shape for sleeve vases at this period.
The prices you were mentioning don't seem too bad, though, so if you're keen at that price and if they're still available, you might consider them.

The lot sold for £380. It wasn't bad value given that there were 7 items of 19th century Kangxi-style porcelain. There was quite a lot of interest while I was looking at them, which is what made me wonder if I had got it wrong.
However, it was a useful trip to the auction as it was interesting to see how different the bases of the two sleeve vases were. The smaller one was clearly 19th c but the larger one had a much better base, even the foot rim was "stepped" but the two things that made me doubt it was anything other than 19th c were the shape and the 4 character mark.
Didn't stop me coming here to check though, once I saw the auction estimate rise! 🙂

A little bit more about the four-character blue Kangxi mark.
I've seen it said that this 'invariably' indicates a 19th century date. Not absolutely true, but very often true. There are some actual Kangxi mark and period pieces that bear a four-character mark, and among these, four-character marks done in overglaze blue, as opposed to underglaze blue, may be found on some high-calibre Kangxi pieces.
However, that said, certainly, as a general rule, four-character Kangxi marks are indeed indicative of a later date of manufacture. As you know yourself, weigh up all the factors when you're deciding on a piece. The way the mark is done is only one of them, even if in this particular case, a powerfully indicative one.

Thanks, Alan. I found looking at these two vases very useful simply because I had the opportunity to actually experience, hands-on, how taking several factors into consideration in preference to a single positive can lead to the correct assessment.
Local auctions are great places to handle things!
