Lots would be open, but some have three. I have never seen just two, though.
A rinsing bowl is not something I have heard of before. How big would they be? I shall have to look into that, as I have probably come across them and thought they were something else. 😊
Rinsing bowls are around 17 or 18 cm in diameter. A lot was made in Meissen. They were probably ordered from China too.

Hello Julia:
Your observations about the holes where the spout joins the body of an antique Chinese teapot as an indication of age is fascinating and I have not seen it mentioned previously although I suspect there would be mention of it somewhere. I did a quick survey of my teapots. The findings are as follows. I will try to get photographs and post them, but such photographs are not easy to take. In the meantime, here are the results of the survey:
Rose Medallion teapot - metal grate (I suspect the metal grate was a later addition because the pot was used as shown by loss of gilding).
Famille rose teapot - Single porcelain hole.
Probable Kangxi teapot - Single porcelain hole.
Amsterdam bont teapot - Three porcelain holes.
Pair of Chinese Imari teapots (formerly Chait Galleries) - One hole.
Chinese Imari chocolate pot (see photographs) - three holes.
Chinese Imari teapot (photograph in earlier post) - three holes.
In most cases, there is some discoloration around the holes and some are smoother than others. As you point out, one wonders why a chocolate pot (or perhaps it was a wine or coffee pot made for the west) would have three holes instead of just a single larger hole. I am attaching a photograph of it. Is it a chocolate pot as I thought when I bought it from a New York City Gallery (and it was described as such) or is it a wine or coffee pot? I have never got to grips with how the handle's alignment or lack of alignment with the spout reflects what the pot was used for. In this case the spout and handle are not aligned.
Regards,
Errol
Hello Vic - the resemblance is uncanny! I think Birgit's theory that the teapot I asked about is European with some amateur Chinese marks (as George observed) on the foot inserted to mislead is correct. It is Chinoiserie. I think that is why it is priced at $100 with free shipping. At least the seller did not try to sell it for $800 or more as is often the case with items of this nature that pose as Chinese antiques.
Regards,
Errol
Birgit, thanks, will try to find some online.
Errol, that is a lovely pot. I am guessing the holes are there because of all the things that might be put in 18th/19th c chocolate and possibly coffee. I have a later Japanese pot and that has a short, open spout so possibly things had improved or been made simpler, by then.
No idea why the handles were put in different places unless it was to distinguish what was in the pots.
Julia
A slop bowl! I never realised that was for rinsing tea cups! 😆
Here is a wonderful picture I found on Gutenberg.org, I will copy the text. Interestingly, the pot with the short wide mouth, that is often used for chocolate especially in 19th c, is referenced as a hot water or milk container. Nice to see them using Chinese porcelain.
