Hi Martin,

It's a beautiful dragon tray. These are in my opinion very underrated and underpriced.

Wang Hing silversmiths were established in canton in 1854 by the Lo family. They were arguably the most prolific silversmith of their time. They later established premises in Hong Kong in the 1920's. At the end of WW2 also saw their demise.

I have seen similar sell on ebay/other for anywhere between $1000-2500usd. High end retailers more $. It's desirable as it's by a good maker and it features a dragon.

What are you planning on using it for?

Well worth holding onto imo! 🐲

Dear Mark

i will hold on to it , i very much like the dragon on this one , some Dragons depicted on chinese Items have squid eyes i not a fan of those i have allready a large wallscreen with a nice strong Dragon. see below .

but that one is more recent . the whole symbolism of the dragon with all it different features taken from other animals is fascinating , for shure something to talk about over a good cup of chinese tea.

best regards from Switzerland Martin

Hi Martin,

Absolutely keep that dragon silver tray. It's beautiful and in my opinion will definitely be a good investment for the future etc.

Something I did not know until very recently was that Wang Hing also supplied Tiffany with Chinese exports. They were cheaper etc.

I also love Chinese and Japanese dragons. Here a few of mine I have. The two jade plaques are part of a collection (12 in all, I think) . The gilt base is a rare example produced by Kinkozan.

Love your screen btw. Hope you enjoy them! 🐲😊

@imperialfinegems

Hi Mark:

I was a little surprised to see that you own an identical framed plaque with a carved dragon to one I won at auction some years ago and that was described as jade. It has the same wooden frame with a silver inlay (see attached photographs). The silver is difficult to see because I assume of dirt and oxidation. I know of no way of cleaning it though because I am told that no silver polishes currently available can be applied to wood also. My dragon plaque has several coarse vein-like structures running through it. Do you think these are jade pieces? Also, what was their original purpose before they were framed.

Best regards,

Errol

Hi Errol,

Yes your looks very much like a genuine jade plaque. Probably early 20th century.

Not entirely sure what they were used for. Except for either a table screen or possibly a wall mount. Not on a wall but part of a wall/other.

According to the seller where I purchased mine (12 or more I bought of various sizes at the time) they were used on the floor with thick glass covering them during the early 20th century.

Where/who did you buy yours from? Mine came from Joanne's House of Treasures in Canada in about 2017. I know they had others for sale prior to my purchase. Yours looks very similar to mine.

Rosewood frame with silver inlaid. Was very popular during the early 20th century.

@imperialfinegems

Hello Mark:

Mine came from JHT too. It was apparently from one of those family estates where the family had emigrated to Canada from China. I rather like it. When I first got it I tried it as a wall hanging and it looked awful. Now I have it on a plate stand on a small table where it gets the light from behind in the mornings and afternoons and there is a lamp behind it at night. It is a nice piece. I agree on the dating and I am pleased to hear you think it is genuine jade. I assume yours and mine originated with the same artist or manufacturer.

Regards,

Errol

@imperialfinegems

Hello Martin and Mark:

I think the Wang Hing Company made wonderful items. I have one item. It's a silver bowl about 5 inches in diameter with a red liner made of Peking glass (see photographs). I have tried to buy more Wang Hing items but the prices are very high now. I recall seeing a goblet on Catawiki for $8,500. I paid $870 for my bowl and I thought that was a reasonable price. I found a similar one at the time, but I decided against buying it because of the high price (see photograph). I recently applied some silver polish and successfully removed the slight yellowish discoloration from mine. I think your tray is very nice.

Regards,

Errol

@erroll,

If I recall correctly I got the last of the jade plaques they had for sale. I purchased one larger dragon plaque at auction and then subsequently purchased the remaining lots privately. I still have them. Most are still in the boxes!

As the frames are identical I would assume they were from the same household/seller as the ones I purchased back in about 2017. I did at the time ask JHT about the history. They replied that the former owner was a wealthy merchant who made a floor completely out of framed jade plaques. Covered in thick glass/other. JHT at the time forwarded to me a photograph showing the floor. Unfortunately I no longer have said photograph. After the communist won (or just before) they fled China and later settled in Canada.

I also have one on a stand. They look most impressive. I was going to have the three larger ones set into a larger frame with LED lighting and display them on the wall. One day perhaps.

Glad you bought one.

I like your Wang Hing silver etched bowl.

This is a dragon silver vase I am currently thinking about.
