Hi,
I was just browsing Catawiki and came across this which I thought was interesting and some of you may find it so, too. I was quite surprised by the base; had I seen that without the mark and attribution, I would have said it was earlier, I shall have to remember that.
JUlia,
You and I seem to always be viewing the same things! It always is neat when pieces are marked for people on the base at Canton. I actually just purchased an armorial platter for the Spanish market with the owner's monogram on the in the same enamel as the face, so done in China. It seems a rather uncommon practice, although I suspect it probably was most common in the 19th century and more so as time progressed.
Thanks for posting this, I too thought, "oh how interesting".
Cheers,
Jeremy
The Keiller plate is indeed authentic Xuantong period. I once tried to buy one from Robert Macpherson but he didn’t react to my mails. I’m sure this one will fetch more than the estimate.
I won’t be bidding as I just bought the huge tankard.
Birgit
It is indeed a rare xuantong marked plate and definitely worth buying it if you can purchase it.
Robert McPherson did have one on offer but it was sold recently. Not sure but I think it was around €850/€950.
Xuantong porcelain is very sought after atm and expensive. Most on the place is later. But this one is imo genuine.
Definitely worth considering if you indeed like it. I do.
I was actually going to buy the one from Robert. But by the time I got around to sending him a message it was already reserved by a client.

I won't be bidding, much as I would like it but I have too many animal expenses at the moment!
I thought I would share it as it is a nice, interesting piece, good to see a genuine mark as well.
I am intrigued to see what it will go for. If any of you bid, good luck!
Sold for 370 Euros. It's a nice plate. I have a plate with very similar sand grit on the foot rim marked with an apo Kangxi mark which I am sure Guangxu-Xuantong period. Something I find interesting is the bottom of this plate & foot rim are really low quality compared to other ones of the same collection. Like this sold one HERE at Shangrila and HERE at Robert McPherson's website. The second example has a perfect foot rim. Why would the foot rims of these plates which were part of the same order be so significantly different? Did they just take whatever premade plates were available and decorate them? I suppose that is the most logical answer rather than making an entire place setting from scratch they just took premade blanks and decorated them to order. Thoughts?
PS Any of you buy it?
Not me. As I said in my first post, I was surprised at the foot of this plate, it looks more like a mid 19th c one. I don't really have an explanation for the differences other than maybe something to do with the place in the kiln (a guess!) so would also be interested to hear what others think.
According to Anthony Allen (picture in my above post) one part of the service was made in 1910 and another in 1913. That might explain the difference.
