Engineering and art are linked. There are people who used to say that calling any utilitarian object art defamed the word "art." This thinking is no longer in vogue.
As for the Qing emperors comment, they're known to have lost wars, and spent vast resources on cultural material that could have been spent on policing and military.
The boat is perhaps inferior. Not sure if it is a replica, which I personally find undesirable. But it is art.
@greeno107 what you described is very true to me. I have always been interested in history, but not art. Now I think I could appreciate art, especially adding its historical aspect. One of the main troubles for me is the fakes. 😵💫
Russell, I liked your comment about jade being considered medicinal and the effect of the display on your cortisol levels. I may have to get some. 😊
Anything can be art, but not everything is art. Utilitarian function can play a factor, but it certainly holds no exclusivity. Knives are among man's oldest tools.... certainly not all knives are works of art. However, there are a bounty of knives made by craftsmen in the Middle East, Japan, and even various indigenous cultures that are easily recognized as works of art.
All this talk of what art is or is not reminds me of a favorite old cartoon of two guys in suits staring at a blank wall and one says, "it is so minimalist that you can't even see it."
@sharonp LOL!
Maurizio Cattelan taped a banana to a wall, then sold it for $120,000 to someone who then ate the banana. Many considered it art, but not all. I kind of see it as performance art, and in that moment of creation to consumption, yes, I think it was art.
If I tape 100 bananas to walls, and try and sell them for $120 each, is it also art? I don't think so. The meaning is lost as I'm simply trying to mass produce a copy of what Cattelan had uniquely created.
Because something involves abstract and subjective interpreation in order to be defined, does not mean there are no boundaries to the definition.
If I sit on a cactus, can I call it a chair? In that moment, the cactus may be functioning in the manner of a chair, but I don't think anyone would make a serious argument claiming the cactus is a chair. (kids, don't try this at home)
Where the line is drawn between art and not art is mysterious, but it exists - feels like I'm back in my Greek philosophy class discussing the meaning of reality as described by Democritus, Plato, Aristotle, ....
BTW - I'm of the school that a blank wall is not art.
@greeno107 Art, like beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Good PR can make an artist greater than they are and lack of it can make an artist valued less, Van Gogh needed better PR in his life time.
Interesting discussion. I guess for me art typically is when conscious thought, creativity, and execution combine to make something. What I find astounding is works of art that took tremendous skill and talent to create that are not valued very highly versus other rather simplistic or even silly pieces that are considered of great value. Unfortunately, we have reached a time imo when many people are not able to recognize or appreciate great art. In part this is because the idea of art has been taken to absurd levels and made a mockery of in the minds of many so they just have little to no interest in it. And for others everything must have a material utilitarian purpose otherwise they don't see a point to it. Those people have a part of themselves in a dormant state and so they are missing out on a tremendous potential. I am glad i choose to surround myself with art and others like all of you who appreciate it as much as I do. John
@sharonp hi Sharon, I have just begun to notice and use the thumbs up or down icon, and I couldn’t tell which one I selected, but by ALL means, I chose an upvote because I love that quote! Thank you for it! And BTW, I’m someone who would only downvote something very offensive…
@charlotte I'm not sure if it would show up down, but if it happens, it is my arthritis, easier to hit when like was the only option.
@johnshoe what is art and what to appreciate very subjective. Here is another example: https://www.bbc.com/news/entertainment-arts-63423811

The art of calligraphy - and for the ancient Chinese it certainly was an art - aimed to demonstrate superior control and skill using brush and ink. Calligraphy established itself as one of the major Chinese art forms during the Han dynasty (206 BCE - 220 CE), and for two millennia after, all educated men were expected to be proficient at it.
