I saw this piece today in Christies online sale and I'm curious why it is being included if it is imitation? By imitation do they mean it is not cinnabar or do they mean it is a modern made reproduction of cinnabar? I bought a fake cinnabar vase last year and my understanding is that it did not have much value, so I'm curious about this.
Oh, maybe I just figured it out. It is made of glass with a coating of lacquer over top? Maybe?....
My understanding is that it is made from glass imitating cinnabar. Giovanni would know more about this.

Since Qianlong period, the palace workshop made a lot of new type of porcelain and glass objects to make the emporers happy. They made imitations of bronze, wood, stone, cinnabar lacquer, fruits and animals using clay and glass.

Hi,
Perhaps Christie's should of used the word simulated rather than imitation. Imitation conjurers the wrong impression now days. Items made from one material to look like another material used to be know as simulated Bronze, leather, wood, etc etc. Simulated wares made in the potteries in the UK in the 19thc and early 20thc were once popular collectables not sure that is the case to day. I have a ceramic tankard that for all the world looks like it's made from leather. All made to deceive the eye or trompe-l'oeil.

Yes. The OP's question related to the term' imitation '. I was perhaps not clearly just making the point that such items used to be referred to as Simulated. So the description might read. " Simulated cinnabar lacquer snuff bottle, made from glass" It is not an imitation it is a real class of thing.

I have heard the term "coral ground" mentioned sometimes from Peter Combs and wondered what it meant. Is it coral grounding as in coral underglaze, ground coral as powdered coral, or does it also implies a spatial context in ground as lower base.
The cinnabar color is nice, very much like the red orange coral from the sea, perhaps the glass contains ground coral as well as clay.

Don’t know what is OP, sorry, I am not so good in English and then not used to abbreviations.
By the way, what I meant is that “glass snuff bottle imitating” is well known and accepted anywhere, so my point was that it was not Christie’s who called them that way.
Anyway, from a not native English speaker, according to the online Merriem-Webster disctionary:
SIMULATE: to give or assume the appearance or effect of often with the intent to deceive
Synonyms for simulate: act, affect, assume, bluff, counterfeit, dissemble, fake, feign, pass (for), pretend, profess, put on, sham
While instead:
IMITATE: to follow as a pattern, model, or example. To appear like, to copy.
Synonyms for imitate: ape, copy, copycat, emulate, mime, mimic
From the above, it seems that Imitating sounds more proper than Simulating.
Dear Banti Loot, coral ground is used for describing porcelain ware with polychrome decoration on a “coral color” ground, i.e. the main back color on which are the enamels.

Don't worry Giovanni, I am also not good at the abbreviations and I am English! I think it means "original poster" or "original post" maybe? It certainly refers back to the first comment in the thread.
