It actually does have a hair-like structure and the material and the carving-style seem to have some similarity with this cup sold at Doyle.
Let's wait for Peter's reply and see what he have to say about it.
I found this old thread another forum where it is noted that ox-horn can also have a hair-like (fibrous) structure.
I have been doing a good study on the horn as stated I’m more interested in age as these are being made today in China one thing I have noticed is the modern ones are molded and poorly carved. I haven’t found one modern carved horn with a cut out base only early carved horns. I’m also interested in the carving method were old tools or modern tools used. This is a very large horn. Lark Mason mentioned that oil of the hands discolors horn to a yellow tint with age. Look at the cut lines see how perfect they boarder the leaves.
Don't know but your cup could possibly be 18th century rhinoceros horn IMHO.
@avatar here are two Christie’s cups both listed as 17th 18th century. The pictures are a little blurry but you can see the cut lines are the same at the base of the leaves also flowers are carved in same manner.

@lotusblack I went on to Christie's and borrowed a few pics....I put a genuine rhino horn on each side of your vase. What do you think?
There always can be some variation in color, but as you know my #1 rule always is to look at the quality of the carving.
In the Christie's examples, I notice both deep and shallow carving, all very controlled/concise with crisp (but smooth) cuts in the carving.
Yours I see deep round simple cuts.
Rhino horn was always extremely valuable (magical), like jade, so it was not given to ametures to carve.
How would you explain the difference?

Notice some of the flower petals are bent naturally...not rigid.
@greeno107 I think comparing Christie’s quality to other known examples is always going to be different. Here is a video from Lark the carving is definitely not very high quality but still of the period.

Again, setting aside color, branches go from thick to thin, edges of flower petals go from deep to shallow carving.
Now, look at the foot...
I'll give you that Lark's example is closer to yours, but still far more refined. To me, this makes sense as a later copy using other material. An inexperienced carver (faker) would pick a design that is easier to fake, but the subtle differences should not be ignored.
Just keep in mind that all rhino horn libation cups were important cultural relics from the time they were made, unlike porcelain that was made at different levels of quality. So, unless excessive damage can explain the inferior appearance, I'm affraid it is not old.
Now, is it rhinocerous horn? Maybe a modern piece made to cash in on the high demand....if that's the case, you best put it on a shelf and enjoy it for yourself - selling it would most definately anger the gods.
@greeno107 I don’t think personally it’s Rhino due to the size it’s pretty large cup. I also believe it is to tricky to put an age to it also because anything can be carved to a period with time and experience. I also agree it’s not refined as I would expect for a Rhino. Now it does line up with quality of 19th century as for 20th century modern faker I don’t think this would pass mustard with modern techniques they could make a resin copy that would be very hard to identify in a archaic style and sucker sell those all day. If I had to throw a arrow. I’m thinking late 19th to early 20th century ox horn. But it’s all a guess
So I’m wondering why this libation cup sold for $4000 listed as late 20th century.
