The popularity of Chinese porcelains and the increasingly challenging market filled with convincing fakes, Qianjiang porcelains had been a refreshing opportunity for collectors to acquire genuine period pieces at reasonable prices.
However, the past 3 years, prices for genuine Qianjiang porcelains of high quality have soared, and now, forgeries are filling the market.
However, for those drawn to the literati style of Qianjiang porcelain, an opportunity still exists to acquire period examples of the artistry that these porcelains exhibit- Shanghai school paintings of the late 19th c.
Chinese paintings have been vastly overlooked by Chinese collectors because of concerns of reproduction- classical paintings and famous 20th c artists have been reproduced hundreds, perhaps thousands of times.
However, the works of the late 19th c. coming from the Shanghai school have somehow escaped the attention of forgery, and for the most part, are quite reasonably priced.
My first introduction to Shanghai school paintings was with a collection of fan paintings I purchased about 12 years ago. Since then, I have acquired dozens of Shanghai school scroll paintings … most for $150 or less.
And, for those hoping to profit financially from their purchases, there are a handful of Shanghai school artists that bring very good results at major auction houses, so there’s plenty of upside for buying now while most works are reasonable in price.
Today, I purchased 3 framed scroll paintings of birds and flowers. Sadly, a 4th painting belonging to this group had been lost, but given the price I paid, the loss did not deter me from making the purchase.
Although these paintings are unsigned, given both the limited number of artists from the Shanghai school during the late 19th c., and the near complete absence of forgeries of these types of works, I’m fairly confident that the works can be attributed very reasonably to one of just a few artists known to paint this manner of birds and flowers.
The most likely artist that these paintings can most likely be attributed to is Ren Yi (1840-1896). If signed, and this was a complete set of four paintings, arguably this set would be quite valuable.
However, monetary value aside, the aesthetics of these paintings are worth preservation and appreciation, regardless of who painted these lovely scrolls.

Below is a painting in my collection painted by an unrecognised Shanghai School artist. It is very naive in style when compared with your excellent paintings, but I hope that you may like seeing it.
@jeremy I love it! I understand your use of 'naive', but honestly, I always felt that the intent of the crudeness of the rendering was that the literati artists were allowing freedom to the brush and ink to play a role in the outcome of the painting - as opposed to rigid man-made adherence to realistic depiction.
I would argue that it is much like the European impressionist movement in that manner. Perhaps not entirely coincidental that the two styles were occuring about the same time period.

Unfortunately, it is a very good woodblock copy of a Ren Yi painting which I believe was made during the 1970's.
