I'll Start: Began collecting in about 1970 following a 2 year tour (1965-1967) of Taipei, Taiwan in the Navy. Learned Mandarin Chinese while there and followed up with degrees at university. Main interest is Chinese Porcelain and Chinese/Japanese Landscape Scrolls. Love all kinds of Asian art. You?
Wow,you have a long history. I collect Chinese antiques for about 10 years. I used to collect any thing I like and affordable, but now I focus on Chinese painting and scroll. However, I found in LiveAuctioneers, 95% of Chinese painting and scroll are fakes. Hope you can paste some of your favorites in the forum to share.
happy Chinese New Year!

Hi Charles, nice to meet you. Ni Hao?
I am collecting landscape scrolls and have found for a long time that you should never buy from any sellers from China. Even the Auction houses have scrolls that have provenance but are too expensive. Let me introduce you to an ebay seller in Japan in the attached link. For some reason I have found a few sellers like this one who accurately describe the time period for most scrolls they sell (if you can find a seller who is honest it is really something to watch their auctions as you can occasionally make a find). There are several other honest Japan sellers. Many Meiji and Taisho period scrolls come up over time.
Ni Hao! Xie Nian Hao!
thank you for the link, it looks good! Ebay sellers from China definitely sell no real antique Chinese paintings. Real ones sell more in Chinese market. A couple of auction houses, like EDEN in Atalanta, sell all fakes. Since they have well provenance information, some fakes sold sky high price. I found that most of those paintings/scrolls in frame under glasses are print. if you just see the photos, you are easily be cheated. In 80’/90’, a lot of famous paintings were printed in rice paper and glued to calendars. Now, some bad guys sell them as original in glass frame.
thanks

I wanted say hello , I started collecting Chinese woodcarving and soapstone carving for about 15year beautiful workmanship all because I broke my wife grandma blue white porcelain roosters she said they were antique so startled going antique malls looking to replace them so now I'm hooked so now learning all I can about history of pieces I pick up
I have an Asain twist, My only friends in high school were Chinese, because my regular friends got me into too much trouble so I stayed away from them, I went to Taiwan in 1985, and went to China 2002 and then 6 more times after that, I went into peoples homes, back streets and stayed away from the tourist stuff except the forbidden city, I met a 92 year old man who lived through the Rape of Nanking, I saw that area where they massacred the people, but this 92 year old man had a collection, I baught it, bronzes, jade, rhino horns and some porcelains knowing nothing about them, but since learned all about them and baught more of the same 4 catorgories
Here is me a long time ago - well in 2002 in China and the old 92 year old man

I bought my first antique in 1973, it was a 19th C. English kidney shaped mahogany desk for my apartment on the harbor Marblehead, Massachusetts. From there I became interested in antique Turkoman and central Persian tribal weavings. By the late 70's I was getting very interested in Middle Eastern and Asian ceramics and metal work. Around then I began buying and selling, also collecting of course.
Around 1980 and onward I became friends with the late Crosby Forbes (Curator of the Peabody Essex Museum) and the late Marion Chait at the Chait gallery in NYC as well as the late Peter Rosenberg at the "Vallin Gallery".
All great people, and all gone now. All of them believed in sharing knowledge for the betterment of the appreciation of Chinese and Asian culture.
And here we all are!

Hi all! My interest began when my dad would take me to flea markets, estate sales, and antique shops every weekend. I began handling chinese vases and porcelain when I was in middle school. I dont know what the median age around here is, but im 24. Not sure if a lot of 24 year olds are out there looking for nice chinese porcelain. HA
Myself, a newbie at actually putting my money down. But for over a year I have been researching Asian ceramics and picking up every thing Peter has said in his weekly newsletter. I became interested via our (my wife and I) love of things Victorian. Victorians just loved to collect exotic things. Well one thing led to another.
Collecting Tiffany studios items had lead me to chinese and asian arts, Tiffany was very inspired by asian arts.
Also i find it very interesting how favrile glass is made. same with glaze productions.
Most importantly !!! you actually have to READ BOOKS and do your homework to find a good asian antique. Today with smart phones everyone is just blooping in a artist name and signature to see if something is really valuable at fairs/shops/markets.
