Hello All
In the upcoming Rob Michiels sale there is being offered what seems to be a very rare octagonal bottle vase albeit with some damage,
Although they have dated it as being a Hongwu period piece, the decoration of the chrysanthemums and the scroll pattern look like those typical of Yuan dynasty blue and white ceramics. I know that the Hongwu period followed on from the Yuan, but I was wondering if there is a difference in value if a piece of blue and white decorated provincial porcelain is dated as being made during the Yuan or Hongwu dynasty?
Kind regards,
Jeremy
I have recently been searching online for examples of Yuan dynasty ceramics decorated with blue and white chrysanthemums and I have noticed that the flowers were painted with a single ring of blue and white petals joined to the cross hatched circular centre. Below is a link to a Yuan dynasty blue and white decoration jar in the British Museum,
https://www.britishmuseum.org/collection/object/A_1972-1212-1
Whereas, I believe that chrysanthemum flowers on Hongwu pieces have a ring of small plain white petals edged in blue being joined to the centre and an additional outer ring of longer blue and white petals. Below is a good example sold by Sotheby's,
Not sure if my observation is correct, but if it is then perhaps the octagonal bottle vase may be older than described, but do Hongwu pieces bring more money than Yuan pieces?
Kind regards,
Jeremy
Hi Jeremy -
You are quite correct, the Rob Michaels damage vase is a known Yuan type, so not Hongwu ...
The attributed Hongwu yuhuchun pings are differing in shape and proportions, the compositions and decoration is very different, as is the cobalt tone, which usually displays a rather pale, greyish/slate blue tone ...
As to which is would be more expensive to acquire, Yuan yuhuchun-pings, although fairly rare, are rather more numerous then Hongwu examples, so the latter tend to fetch higher prices - although this is very dependent on condition and provenance, if any. Hongwu period wares, including such vases, decorated in underglazed red are far numerous then underglazed blue examples ...
Attached examples for comparison:-

Hello Stuart
Please may I ask if the exhibition showed any Yuan blue and white decoration jars?
Kind regards,

I was fortunate enough to view, some truly breathtaking pieces, and have the Ex catalogue ...
Stuart
Although the bidding for this vase did not run away, it did sell for just over the lower estimate. It would seem that the damage was outweighed by it's rarity.
Kind regards,
Jeremy
