The Hoi An Shipwreck was discovered in the 1990s in the South China Sea near the coast of Vietnam. It was salvaged by professionals from 1996 on. They found over 250.000 intact pieces, many of which were auctioned in 2000 in the US.
The pieces were made around 1450 not far from where the wreck lies in some pottery villages. They come in great variety from big ewers and plates to tiny vases and boxes. Their style is very different from the Chinese Ming style of the time. Often animals are depicted, always in a very lively way.
I have only two modest little jars (4,5 resp. 5 cm high) but they show the vivid painting style as well as the large expensive pieces. Here is a sparrow from the official salvage, carrying the sticker and a number:
A jarlet with a funny bat that I bought from a seller in Indonesia. No official sticker on it, so it possibly comes from an illegal salvage by fishermen, but it is also from the Hoi An wreck:
There was an auction catalogue "Treasures from the Hoi An Hoard" which is very expensive now. An Ebay seller from Scotland scanned it into a PDF and sold it on DVD for little money, but he seems to have stopped that. Here's a page from the catalogue:
I can highly recommend the book "Dragon Sea" by Frank Pope, who was directly involved in the salvage. It is fun to read, especially if you have your own small piece of the Hoi An Hoard sitting on the table before you.
As there were so many pieces at the 2000 auction, they are still available on the market from $30 upwards. For a jarlet like mine in good condition be prepared to pay $100-150. Good sources are Ebay and Trocadero. Beware of the water droppers on Ebay in the form of elephants, cats etc. They look too good to be true and are most probably fakes. Real water droppers from the Hoi An are more expensive and look different. I don't think the little jarlets have been faked so far, but you never know.

I missed this post when it was new; for some reason your photos disappeared.
I just recieved my copy of The Elephant and the Lotus; Vietnamese ceramics in the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston and am enjoying the photos and text and I am new to Vietnamese pottery.
The jarlets, like the ones from the Hoi An wreck, were "...sometimes used as patung gana-gana, or "magic pots," to contain a magic substance called pupuk that was used in divinatory rituals." (p. 183). The most popular bird that adorns their pottery is the Oriental Magpie Robin, the chích chòe.
The lot of jars I bought a couple of weeks ago include some Vietnamese jarlets and I'm looking forward to handling them and comparing them to the Chinese examples.

A few years ago I bought a third Hoi An jarlet in London. The shop had about a hundred of them. And there were many available online. Now it looks like most of them had gone, all I found at a quick search were these:

They seem to be selling - good to know! And via your link I see that someone in Canada is listing their Hoi An bowls as Chinese Ming. They even included the Hoi An certificate which clearly states that they are Vienamese. Interestingly, I had Peter appraise the lot of jarlets I bought and he said the Hoi An example was Chinese for the Vietnamese market which seems to be incorrect. Well, no one's perfect!
