Hi All. I know these are commonly found items, and are difficult to date, but this one, sans lid or cover, is rather nice, I feel. It has an undercut foot, and probably Kangxi revival, but I am not entirely sure. The clay also has a pinkishness to it, and the blue is a rather lovely paler blue with the cracked ice theme. Given the form, the foot and so on, I was wondering if anyone has some expertise and can pass on some advice. I'm guessing late 19thC, but it may be earlier. I really do not know. I have attached images. I picked it up today in a junk shop here in Australia from about $12 US
Dear Shaun,
I think you're right, that your jar is a nineteenth century one rather than a Kangxi period one, and there are a number of reasons that come to mind to suggest why this may be so.
First, there's the way the decoration is done, which has the appearance of being done somewhat more rapidly than you'd generally find on the earlier pieces. Second, the cracked-ice pattern that you clearly know about and mention, and that is typical of the earlier examples, on the later versions isn't normally done with the same amount of precision either. If you compare an early cracked-ice pattern with what you see on your jar, you'll find that in fact the early example looks somewhat different; I don't have an image to hand, unfortunately, but you'll be able to turn one up quickly enough yourself. Third, the exposed ceramic paste on the earlier pieces has characteristically a white or a creamy white tone to it, and normally it will be as smooth as silk to the touch, with no sensation of graininess to it at all. Obviously, that's something that a photograph can't convey, so it's impossible to tell (though the slightly pinkish colour isn't something you'd associate with an earlier piece), but you can also run that test for yourself.
So, to my eye, though you don't have a Kangxi period piece there, for the price you paid for it, you have done well. It seems to be a nicely made jar, and in good condition too. Keep hunting!
Alan
I agree with Alan, regardless you got a bargain!
Here's an image of the bottom of a Kangxi example for comparison.

Hi Chaps, yes, as I did think. My apologies for not replying sooner. Big time difference between where you are and Australia. As you'd be aware, there are a great number of these jars around on eBay etc, and some are asking for outrageous prices. I'd never trust something like that to luck if I was an inexperienced collector. For something I have a bit of 'feel' for though, and with a little research behind me, I have found a few surprising gems in my time, but being out of work, I tend to scrounge junk shops and places like that.
Thank you for replying, Alan and Peter. It was good to have my guesswork confirmed. Trouble with 19C is that it spans a hundred years! Still, for me it's as much about the look of a thing.
Cheers, and best wishes. Shaun
Dear Alan,
thank you very much for the helpful information about the prunus jars. Now and then I thought of buying one but there are so many of them on Ebay and I could never tell the difference from new to old. Also thanks to Peter for providing the picture of an old example.
Best regards
Shinigami

Keep an eye on the News-Letter page also, each week when we select things to be included we always include Kangxi pieces if they are on eBay. If we have any doubts we don't include them, unless its a later pretty example and the seller clearly says "19th C." or "Kangxi-style 19th C." etc.
There are a number of them this week actually.

I have a good example from the Kangxi period. Compare with a painting from this period and you can find the similarity. It is a good way to understand the style of porcelain paintings.

Calligraphy established itself as one of the major Chinese art forms during the Han dynasty (206 BCE - 220 CE), and for two millennia after, all educated men were expected to be proficient at it.
