Like Peter mentioned in Friday's video, have fun remembering your childhood Halloween trick or treat adventures. Greetings from Texas, my chrysanthemum is the perfect color for the season. I will divide and plant in the flower beds and if we have a mild winter, it should come back next year. Just a garden center pot, the pot survived 2020, alas the garden center did not survive. The metal work was from an artist at Terlingua, Texas in the late nineties, when my husband was in a 3 day mountain bike race at Big Bend Country, while he raced, I took the jeep and explored the park. It has survived the outdoors to have lived at two of my homes in Texas. When I lived in Houston, it was in the Energy Corridor and the little wooden Texas flag was from a shop at my favorite stomping ground, Town and Country Mall, the sign has survived, alas, Town and Country Mall is gone. The barbed wire is from a family barn in Missouri, that I used to make a wreath in the eighties with my 3 kiddos, we decorated little wooden farm animals for the wreath along with some English Box and Holly greenery. The Day of the Dead ceramic skeleton head is my souvenir from seeing the Mexican Mayan ruins at Tulum. My early childhood home in the city of St. Louis is no more but Halloweens were fun and running past a 2nd Empire style home on the corner with the bricked-up side windows in which a woman had shot and killed her husband in the nineteen-twenties and she continued to own but did not live in it or allow anyone else to live in it, she also kept his nineteen-twenties black car in the garage. It must have been a justified homicide because she did not go to prison and lived in an apartment across the street from the corner house. My Mother always made me politely say hello to her if we met her on the street, she was not popular with small children, but her old house made for some good scary stories on Halloween. What a creepy story. You don't often know why a place is boarded up & rundown; to have it be the site of a known tragedy is especially skin-crawling.
I remember as a kid listening to the tales of a good friend of the family, a defense attorney. The best one involved a late night phone call from a client threatening suicide. When they got to the house the door stood wide open, the wife and client were dead in the bedroom, and a bloody ax lay in the kitchen sink.
When I was 19 and fresh out of high school I house-sat for a friend who was to be out of town for the summer. It was a modest yellow 1920s house near the train tracks and had a three-room basement with a black, empty coal room. I was really excited because I could set up my dark room down there and leave everything out. Anyway, on the first night there when I turned off the lights to develop, I had this immediate and urgent sense that someone was in the room behind me, in confrontation. Now, I'm used to dark, creaky old houses but this was something different. I immediately turned the light back on, put the chemical baths away, and hightailed it upstairs. It was an interesting summer in that house to say the least. I and many of my friends had experiences. It seemed to be an old man, sad about something. I imagined he had lost his wife.
