Dear all,
I am speechless with a bad packing…. Plate is 13” diameter, almost 300 years old and got broken to reach my hands. Right now dealing with the shipper and they need an estimate to restore it. I have reached Caroline at CO. Who else do you use? Someone at east coast? Near Charlotte, NC? Thanks in advance
What a shame, I hope someone can help. Don't forget to factor in loss of value.
@yinchris Yin, sorry for your loss.
Scott's antique market in Atlanta is coming up in a few weeks. There has been a woman setting up there that does restorations. I've seen her work.... very good quality and because she deals with a lot of dealers, her prices seem to be reasonable.
That said, the break is so very clean, I would recommend against paying a restorer - just carefully glue the two halves back together. They're going to have to do a lot of overpaint to hide the crack that runs right through the center of your plate.
A few years ago, I bought a large imperial Yongzheng charger that I sold through Christie's... the seller broke the plate in half. accidentally, while setting up for the estate sale. When I put the piece up for sale, Christie's offered to restore the plate at their cost, but upon inspection they decided to leave the piece 'as is', and simply glued the two halves together. The break was so clean/fresh and without loss, that it was not that noticable, and the plate did very well at the sale.
Your plate is quite beautiful. Once glued back together, I doubt the crack will be all that noticable, and you avoid all the overpaint on the white porcelain that never quite has the same luster as the original porcelain.
Can it be returned for a refund?
Thanks everyone for your input.
I bought it from an auction house in Belgium and shipped by FedEx through a shipping company. So return is out of question, since it's fully insured and they are asking estimate to restore it. Because of the size, I am trying to limit to ship back and forth again.
Do you know this lady's name? if I can get an estimate. I don't mind driving to Atlanta.
@yinchris I don't know her name off hand. I'll see if I can find her business card, but that's a long shot.
@yinchris not sure if this makes you feel better, recently it’s reported that TW palace museum admitted 3 objects broken. One broke when moved. Two of them thought due to storage issue? The first is Kangxi, and the blue and white dish is qianlong.
Tim, is it Angela? Here is her website with her picture on it?

With pieces broken all the time, make this hobby becomes expensive each day.
@yinchris Honestly, I don't remember her name.... you could call Scott's main office and speak with one of the ladies that books the reservation for the North building.... I'm sure they'd have a name and phone number.
That is a good idea. Will do. Thank you soooooooooooo much.
Oh that is such a disappointment when it happens! It has happened to me twice, once fairly recently, and my plate was too broken to have repaired, so I think you’re way ahead of many with your clean break. Best of luck with all of it! It’ll look beautiful when restored!
Thanks Charlotte, at least repairable.
Dear all,
Need your inputs again, what I know the shipping company has filed claim through Fedex on 10/26 about this item. I have no idea how long the process will take. I have sent multiple emails to the shipping company for the updates, heard nothing. I do not know what to do next. The Shipping company is in Belgium. Thanks in advance.
Yin
@yinchris Yin, I think you need to call FedEx directly. First, you are the property owner, so any claim needs to filed that you receive the benefit. If FedEx needs to see proof of ownership, then you just send them a copy of your payment to the auction house that shows the item(s) you purchased.
So, I do not have experience filing a claim with FedEx, but I did file a few claims with UPS.
Their tactic is to deny any claim that they did not pack themselves. So, you need to provide photos of the packaging material and measurements that show that the packing was sufficient for a safe arrival.
Then, the shipper usually will pay a full amount of the insured value, but they take ownership of the item, so you'll need to give the item back.
In my 2nd issue with UPS, I negociated to keep the item and receive a 50% refund.
I think my advice is to contact FedEx regularly until they come to some resolution, or just file a full claim for the insured amount, and surrender the damaged item to FedEx.
