Hi,
Anyone got any view on the vase above, please. I will add a photo of the foot.
Thanks,
Julia
Dear Julia,
This particular colour combination, chiefly of iron red with gilt, and in the decorative patterns such as you see on your vase, is often found from the Kangxi period on. Furthermore, I'm optimistic that you may have an authentic piece here that belongs to that period. The iron red and gilt palette has been copied fairly well in our modern period (as indeed have many other styles, shapes, and decorations), but in the case of your vase, forget what the decoration may be saying for a moment and concentrate on the foot ring. Feel the exposed paste. What does it feel like to you, describe the sensation of touching it. From the pictures you've provided, it looks to me as if it may have the density, smoothness, and typical colour that you'd expect of a real period piece.
A final question, if I may, where did you find your vase?
All the best,
Alan
I agree with Alan, this is a genuine Kangxi piece.
hi everyone, I dont know why alan said dont pay attention to the decoration, because that is what threw me off, it looked contemporary, but after looking at the foot, I can see the denseness, and agree that it's probably a Kangxi period piece, but at first thought it to be a 19th century beaker vase, usually part of a set of 5 or more which made up a garniture set, or religeous, altar type ware, for honoring the dead. Wow congrats julia, and sorry I did not say hi before, just did not have the chance. CONGRATULATIONS:)
JOE CARAZOLA
Hi everyone,
Thank you for confirming what I thought.
Sadly it isn't mine. I saw it in a local auction catalogue yesterday, guide price £80 - £100. Thought it looked genuine so went to look. Was more convinced than ever it was Kangxi. Estimate had gone up to £100 - £150 by the time I got home, which was encouraging (I also now believe it was originally set at £40 -£60!!!) but this morning, nerves set in, after all, what do I know? So I posted up the pictures.
I should have done so last night, but I was late home etc etc. So, as there was no reply, I decided to follow my instincts and bid. Unfortunately, it went well above what I was prepared to risk on my judgment. I knew I was in trouble when I saw 3 phone bidders being set up! One of them was relentless, I think he/she would have gone higher.
I will post a link to the auction as I should acknowledge the source of those photos just in case.

My consolation is, I recognised it for what it was. How good is that? Thanks for your help.
Best wishes,
Julia
Dear Julia,
Sorry to hear that this one got away from you. The price that ended up being paid is realistic, but just as you say, your consolation prize is knowing that your knowledge is really shaping up! There's bound to be another opportunity around the corner, and when it comes along, you'll be well placed to seize it.
All the best,
Alan
Hello Alan,
Thank you. I was a bit upset but the consolation prize is great! In that sense, I am really happy! 🙂
Thanks to you all for your help.
Best wishes,
Julia
Hi Julia,
my experience is that there is always a second chance. So much porcelain is on the market now, and thanks to the web we are able to find it and order it from all over the world. Up to 20 years ago collectors (at least those of average means) had to be content with what was sold by local dealers or auction houses. As far as I remember the antiques dealer in my town, long gone, this was just the stuff that Ebay is still full off: low quality rose medallion pieces, hideous Japanese vases, mass goods. I think the reason why so many old people have collected this ugly stuff is that it was all they could buy from their dealers. So don't worry and enjoy the possibilities of the web: as Alan says, the next opportunity is just around the corner.
Best regards
Shinigami
Birgit
It looks Kangxi to me, the shape, decoration and foot all look good, a few of the images look a bit yellowish, but thats usually due to poor light balancing with the cameras, or from a nearby fluorescent light.
Chalk it up to "the one that got away!"
A nice pot though.
best Peter
Peter
Thanks, everyone! 🙂
