I had an occasion to become exited early this week; I noticed a very unusual Chinese Bronze Censer offered on E Bay. I had only seen this type once earlier in a 1980 issue of Arts of Asia.  As I studied the censer, there was no question that I was going to bid on it. The seller had it dated much later than the 16th century dating I put on it. EBay bidding was mild for several days in the $100 to $200 range but as it came within less than an hour to close,  someone placed a larger bid; the current bid jumped to $1500 from $200! What Idiot did this I asked myself!!? EBay has a wonderful tool which is simply this; click on the highlighted user name next to the bid of the high bidder; the idiot of course ($1500 guy) and a screen comes up showing how much activity that bidder has done with the seller of my desired censer.  In this case, the screen showed that the person that bid $1500 had done 100% of his eBay buying with the person offering this censer. I mean, like this person never bought from anyone other than this seller; with all the thousands and thousands of sellers this seller was his go to guy, his Numero Uno.  EBay has this feature in an attempt to potentially identify a Shill Bidder, i.e. someone who is really only bidding to get the price up that other bidders must pay to acquire the object of their desire; certainly not a level playing field if that be the case.  Of course, I can't say for sure that this is what was going on,  but like I said a moment ago; 100% of this high bidders history has been with this seller.  Within 10 minutes the bidding put the price at #2000; someone with more desire than me was actually willing to pay it. Considering the rarity of this censer $2000 wasn't really that much in that it was in pristine condition from all I could see with good photos. The next big jump over the $2000 bid had me flipping back to the "who done it page". Sure enough it was the hundred percent guy!  The Ebay closing is very fast so there wasn't enough time to see who bid the over $5000 amount that popped up as the winning bid.  Was this someone without a previous relationship with the seller or was this the 100% guy? who knows, I tried to find out with refreshing the web pages with no success.   I will say this however, had Christi's Offered this Censer in a Hong Kong Sale I would not be surprised at a $8,000 to $15,000 price one bit, maybe even $20,000 as the quality and rarity were all there for the taking.  What is the "watch word" here.  Always pay as much attention to who is bidding against you, as your own bid strategy so you can determine if your on a fair playing field!!

I don't understand this very well - you think a censer that was worth potentially $20,000 sold for $5000 on ebay, but only because of shill bidding?

was this on Peter's newsletter ? maybe you can post the ebay link.

Hong Kong has some amazing prices realized but I'm saying on a good auction day it might have brought that amount.  The censer was not among those items featured by Peter.  Finally, it is possible that seller was testing the market right before Christmas and had a $5000 "protection bid"  put in to make sure it didn't get away too cheaply.  The whole reason behind the post was to draw attention to the EBay feature that provides insight to who is bidding on a particular item and their potential relationship to the seller.  thanks for your comment, Bruce

Thank you Bruce. I have noticed that Ebay feature before but never really knew what to make of it. Now I understand it better.

Your welcome.  I love bronze.  Also, wood and bamboo and more and more of the "molded fakes" are are appearing on ebay and other auctions around U.S..  tricky sellers blurring a key photo but leaving most in focus, all the games make me unhappy about the state of affairs in the market today.
