Hi,
This isn't a test or a trick, I just wondered where people thought this flowers were painted?
They are described as Chinese 18th c and they may well be, but there are other aspects of the items, which also made me unsure. So, I did a google image search. Everything that came up was from European countries.
Thanks for any opinions,
Julia
Sorry they are small but I cropped them from online photos which may have been small to begin with.
I think they look European to me the enamels look thin.
Old Noritake had lots of patterns with European style florals and black and gold rim treatments, but Noritake was marked in some way. Japan had these patterns, Meito too, so it is likely that China had them as well. It does look like a German inspired pattern, like Noritake's Dresdoll pattern. If there are no maker's mark anywhere and it seems unlikely made for domestic market, then it must have some age before country of origin marks required, although western style was particularly popular in certain Chinese locations such as Shanghai.
Thanks both of you. No helpful marks on the bases and I also felt the colours were maybe too wishy-washy and the gilding broader than I would expect to see.
To me the flowers have a European touch. 19th century, not 18th.
Birgit
Thank you, even if they are Chinese, I was wondering if they might be more likely jiaqing period. I have been staring at them and am wondering if there aren't actually 3 as there are differences that would be explained by there being 3, so I have asked the seller.
The florals are in the manner of 18th to 19th century Jiaqing export ware, but other kilns such as Samson have produced similar items. The rim makes me want to call this European.

This is a period export example that has a gold rim. It's chicken skin, so probably Chinese.
The decoration is talking to European ceramics here.
Thanks, I can't get away from my feeling that it is European either, or decorated in Europe. I will put up the bases later; they look more Chinese which is why I wanted to see what about the flowers/border on their own. There are only 2, the colours must have been enhanced in some photos.
Here are the bases, I really have no doubt these are Chinese even though they are slightly different. Maybe they were made at different times which is why the flower groups are slightly different, too? Maybe the flowers just look very european because at the time they were made there was so much competition from european potteries that they felt they had to emulate the style more to be competitive?
Isn't it funny how things happen sometimes? I was just looking for something like John's sugar bowl and I came across this pattern I was talking about in a dinner service. There was a mention an item in the same design at Christies in 2012 (or 14) which I found and it dates that piece to last quarter of 18th c. So, there is the answer to my question. I will post a link and thanks for all your help.
Isn't it funny how things happen sometimes? I was just looking for something similar to John's sugar bowl and I came across this pattern (ie in this thread) on a dinner service. The details were a bit vague but it mentioned an item in the same design at Christies in 2012 (or 14) which I then looked up: the date their piece to last quarter of 18th c. So, there is the answer to my question: Chinese export. I will post a link to the Christies piece which has a better photo. Thanks for all your help.
Sorry I posted that twice. I thought my first go wasn't very clear so I edited it and seemed to have ended up with two. 🤔
