Hello, I wonder how can I protect myself from buyer fraud on E-bay? If someone buys from you and says to e-bay that the product is not as described, he gets the money back and can send you back potatoes. You can video-tape every step of the packing and unpacking as you get your product back and E-bay still will side with the buyer. If the product is in the hundreds of dollars probably you forget about it and count it as a loss.
Best regards
Michael
Just resolved with a 40% partial refund.
Spitting Feathers but what else can you do.
Is there a solution, or is it just a risk you take as a seller on e-bay ?
I wonder about the piece Juice1499 sold for 22k dollars, what do you do then ?

I hate ebay, honestly I do. If I ever had a chance of selling anything for an extraordinary price, ebay would not be the place. Never. I don't get people. Let's think of 2 scenarios. What would you rather like to say from this alternative: 'I have sold an item for 22k on ebay' or 'I have sold an item for a lot... at Christie's'?
Kind regards,
Adrian

I’m not qualified to call this piece genuine or fake.
I’d have liked more background information to be honest.
Adrian i start to think if i really want to sell on e-bay, it is a big problem if you encounter this kind of "buyers".
Any ideas for other sites to sell ? I like catawiki, but can't sell from my country.
Thank you for all the feedback.
Regards
Michael
If you find yourself dealing with someone who wants to return an item for reasons you know to be false, then plan accordingly.
If you have to pick it up at a post office, then explain the situation at the post office and get the manager to open the package with you right there. If the item is not as it should be, then get the manager to document what is found. Then take the whole lot to your police station and file a complaint. I find ebay is quite helpful in these situations.
If ebay is not helpful, file a complaint with the better business bureau. This complaint will get to someone higher up in ebay, who will usually be very helpful.
If the package is delivered at home, and you open it at home, do so with a witness. If you video it even better. Once open take the contents and package to the police station and file a complaint. Ebay is usually very helpful when they get a copy of the complaint. If not, use the BBB approach above.
After selling on ebay since 2001, I find its generally only Chinese buyers that attempt to rip you off in various ways.
Lastly, if you get ripped off by a Chinese buyer, report it to the nearest Chinese Embassy. I did this once with a Chinese buyer who was fraudulently pretended he didn't receive my item and got his money refunded. It didn't take long at all before the Chinese buyer returned all my money into my paypal account. According to the Chinese Embassy representative, he did a lot of crying!
Never understate the customs value. For two reasons - first its illegal, which makes it problematic to do the above. Second it means the buyer has had to pay the customs duty to take delivery, and is less likely to want to return it unless they have good reason to do so.
Finally, if you get messed around by anyone, put the full details on badbuyerlist.org It stays there forever, for all to see.
If you smell a rat, do some online homework before you ship the item in the first place. If you have concerns, phone ebay and paypal and share your concerns and ask for their guidance.
What a comprehensive manual! That's a lot of good advice hard to overestimate. Thank you for that, Avionsunantiques.
Michael: I don't know, maybe I am a grumpy fart, but I like a direct contact with people - buyers and sellers. I have stopped listing on ebay a while ago and I prefer to pack my old car and head on antique market, even if that means 2 nights of complete survival and living on tins 🙂
I have my online store, from time to time I put there an item or two. But my no.1 is a regular, old school, street market. And you get some cash in hand. Then you do some weekend shopping for the rest of the week, pay some bills and you're broke again. I love it 🙂
All the best!

I totally agree. I prefer dealing direct with people.
Thanks for the great advice Avionsunantiques. I will try to take care and do my homework before shipping.
