So, my daughter-in-law and I just got off a Chat with EBay. Two items she shipped in early April have been sitting in a processing facility in China since the 16th of April without delivery, and EBay is holding her money, and quite possibly will issue a refund to the buyer (roughly $2,000 total) because China’s post office is not delivering due to COVID and staffing shortages.
It may not be effecting every area of China, but I think it’s quite serious, so if you are planning to ship, you may want to rethink it.
Sadly she has several more items in China sitting undelivered, so she might be out around $5,000 if Ebay refunds the buyers…even worse, they might deliver the items after the refund, so they’ll be no recourse to get the items or the money back.
Just be careful.
That's awful. I'm so sorry to hear it. When I finally start listing things on Ebay or wherever, I have half a mind to only seel to US & Canada.
@steve I think you are safe to list globally. However, if you get a big ticket sale, or a lot of smaller sales to China, you may want to address this issue in advance with your buyer...
Perhaps have them acknowledge in advance of shipping that they will not file a complaint if there is a delay.
Or, ask them to provide the address of someone living within the US (or whereever you're located) and have them ship there instead of China.
I understand some of the frustration of the buyers, but it is simply unfair for Ebay, with all their billiions, to put the failure of the Chinease postal service on the shoulders of the little guys out there just trying to make a living.
Might be time to sell here on BidAmount!
Some Chinese buyers on ebay have contacts in the USA who handle the buying and shipping for their clients. I had issues with sales in Russia last year, but it is now totally suspended. Politics can ruin a good thing.
This is what the USPS has posted regarding mail to China...
China
4-4-22
China Post advises that to prevent further transmission of COVID-19 the processing of inbound mail is temporarily affected at Shanghai, Changchun and Yanji mail processing centers until further notice. Inbound mail received by these offices of exchange cannot be processed or transported to sorting centers/delivery offices. This delays processing, transiting and delivery of inbound mail, as well as updating of electronic messages and responses to online customer inquiries.
My daughter-in-law has a piece stuck in Beijing, too, so I think it is evern more widespread.
I have had the same issue I believe China customs is stealing the items. Another scam if you don’t ship global network the buyers know the package can’t be tracked they get the item but tell you they never received it. I think you might have been a victim of this scam.
It appears to be both ways as well. I bought a 90 dollar subscription to Orientation magazine that allegedly shipped months ago, but never arrived. I suspect the publisher thinks they finished the transaction.
@lotusblack Everything we ship is USPS Priority Express, which is a branch of the global network and is tracked every step.
I don't really think the items are being stolen as the records show their arrival very clearly in China....they can even tell internally who scanned the item.
But, I was reading that every item coming into China is being disinfected prior to being shipped out within China, and they simply do not have enough people to handle the inflow.
Regardless, you are probably correct...my daughter-in-law (and me, too, since I'm the one who buys this stuff) are going to take a $5,000 hit I think in the next 30 days or so.
If I knew this earlier, I would not have shipped anything to China....which is why I'm posting......DON'T SHIP TO CHINA! Sorry to all my Chinese friends hoping to buy antiques, but this is a lose - lose situation.
@rahawkins War is generally bad for business, unless you are a war profiteer.
I've had people who know what they are doing give me investment advice regarding this topic. I havent taken it. I feel like investing in war is tantamount to praying for it, but that's just me...
Officially, I would buy war bonds as an American, only for America because that is where I live.
I feel her pain. Shipping to China was ALWAYS a stressor for me. I only shipped tracked and Canada only has a few countries on their list of destinations that offer tracked at a "discounted" rate and China isnt one of them (oddly enough continental Europe also isnt either), so they paid through the teeth for the top shipping option just for a tracking number. Honestly, there are very very little options as a seller as to what you can do. With what's going on in Shanghai right now, I would definitely be cautious about shipping there. While it may be a good sale (and Chinese definitely don't mind dropping the cash! Some of my best past customers in fact) you don't want it to bite you in the ass! I dont know what shipping company she shipped with but in the future, for higher valued items, she may want to look into other logistic companies who have more stable delivery options & guarantees. Did eBay say specifically that they would refund the seller even though she provided a tracking number? That seems quite outrageous policy, what happened to "Seller Protection"?? Let us know what happens.
All the best,
D.
As some of you know, I shipped to China recently, it took a month or more but the items arrived intact, yesterday. Phew!

Maybe you guys you have to take into consideration eBay global shipping program, even considering that eBay covers parcels up to 1.5k (if nothing changed within last few years). Once parcel or parcels shipped when using eBay global shipping program, then it's eBay's issue, not yours anymore once eBay got them in theirs hands before posting abroad.
Everything else is sad story and sad experience , with no bright in at the end of a dark (eBay's) tunnel.
Hopefully you will be able to resolve this somehow.
@lucky That is a good suggestion, but is has been my experience Chinese buyers will not buy from you if you use Ebay shipping services because most Chinese buyers want you to declare a low value to avoid paying the taxes, and Ebay will not ship an item for less than the full sales price.
I tried several years ago when I was active on Ebay (I only sell a few things now, and mostly just give items to my daughter-in-law) to declare the full value of items and insure every shipment to China.
The result was that buyers would not pay the tax and abandoned their items, and Ebay would still hold me responsible.
If you disclose that you will only declare full value in your sales listing, then you will get far fewer and lower bids, and still will encounter complaints regarding the declared value.
So, in my experience, Ebay's Global shipping service is not an option for those selling high dollar antiques in China.

The art of calligraphy - and for the ancient Chinese it certainly was an art - aimed to demonstrate superior control and skill using brush and ink. Calligraphy established itself as one of the major Chinese art forms during the Han dynasty (206 BCE - 220 CE), and for two millennia after, all educated men were expected to be proficient at it.
