Unfortunately this two book set has become awfully expensive. If someone owns it: would you please be so kind and take a picture of the Qianlong grisaille plate „The geese of brother Philippe“? Thanks a lot!

Really cool plates... even if somewhat more common, I'd love to see it. I do love those grisaille pieces.
Out of curiosity have you ever come across any pieces of export from the collection of Augustus the Strong of Saxony?
I believe I either just bought a pair of Famille Verte cups from his inventory or fakes, I'll know in a few days...

here is my plate. The color looks somewhat dull but it's rather blue as 18th century sometimes is. I had been looking for a nice Grisaille piece for years and found this on Catawiki. If there is some red color in the faces, is it still correct to call it Grisaille? The plate is in perfect condition (I'm the snob who avoids buying damaged pieces) but I paid considerably less than half of what the buyer of a slightly damaged pair paid at the Rob Michiels auction 6 years ago. https://www.rm-auctions.com/fr/arts-dasie-ii/2992-a-pair-of-chinese-export-porcelain-grisaille-and-gilt-plates-qianlong-18th-c I don't know if it was just luck or if a pair is always worth more than double the price of one. Or if the prices of export porcelain are going down.
I'm looking forward to your Augustus the Strong cups. In the 1880s the Dresden museum sold part of their collection, so you now and then you find authentic pieces on the art market. I have a Kangxi plate from that collection.

That is a very clean example, with almost no wear. Great buy!
Definitely still grisaille, I often come across them with rosy cheeks and skin toned faces, especially the nicer ones.
I will certainly post the bowls when they arrive.

Hey John,
I am fairly certain that the earliest ones were around 1740 or so. I am not totally sure the evolution of it but apparently they started experimenting with cobalt glazes with no flux added and were able to produce these black enamels but they are easily worn off, then by the Qianlong there were black and brown/sepia enamels that were used. I think there are slightly earlier versions ~1720-40 but the enamel is actually red or dark brown, but as a true form I think it is a Qianlong invention.
Kinda a babbling answer but I hope that helps a bit....

@jbeer2121 Another question I have is why did they do so much grisaille with European subject matter? Perhaps it had a classical look that appealed to certain Europeans who weren't as attracted to the more colorful enamels? Or maybe there is a different reason that someone could share. It just seems that a lions share of European subject pieces are done in grisaille so clearly is was a thing for some reason. John
I always get the feeling (rightly or wrongly) that it has something to do with engravings.
Julia is right, it’s because they had copper engravings to copy from. These were comparatively cheap and widespread and could easily be taken to China.
