Hi all,

I am looking for dealer recommendations for Chinese and Japanese art generally. The small list I have has been slowly added to whenever I see someone bring a name up, but I thought its high time to flesh out the list. So far I have these:

  • ShangriLa Antiques
  • Cohen and Cohen
  • Robert McPherson Antiques
  • Steve Sly Japanese Art
  • Ben Janssens Oriental Art
  • Galerie Nicolas Fournery
  • Brian Page Oriental Art

Kindly,

John

Well others that get mentioned are Lark Mason, Rob Michels and Leslie Hindman. The fellow in Pennsylvania. not the actor, Mark Walberg.

Hello Birgit

I agree with you regarding Edmund. As he is selling his residual stock I would advise people to check out his items as soon as possible in order to be able to purchase his remaining items with a 50% discount.

Kind regards,

Jeremy

Sam Bernstein from Bernstein jade and oriental art in San Francisco.

Ben Janssens is a very nice guy to deal with. I talk with him regularly.

@bartholin

Hello John

I have personally found both Edmund Grundner and Matthew at Brian Page Oriental Art a pleasure to purchase items from.

Today there has been quite a bit of discussion about Imperial Moon Flask vases, but I thought it may be worth pointing out that Ma San auction house is selling an interesting Moon Flask from the Brian Page collection, the link being,

Kind regards,

Jeremy

Thank you, Sharon, Birgit, Jeremy, and Mark!

As I'm building my collection and going through my own Asian Art journey, the "issue" of provenance has been on my mind. I like the idea of working with dealers to build my collection. I'm grateful for the many recommendations!

Hello John,

Guest and Gray, they have a Catalog plus Ebay pages. Don't be put off by their seeming high prices I often look at their ebay listing starting with lowest price first and have found some nice affordable items their shipping is reasonable and they know how to pack items.

Thank you, Michael. I found their website, but I was unable to find their eBay page. Would you kindly link it here for me? They have a great selection 😀

Yes Guest and Gray is a great seller. As Michael said not cheap on first glance but what you get is perfect. Not everything is on their Ebay site, so check out the website too. Their shop in London was a surprise to me as it had about the size of a telephone booth. But they have a storage elsewhere and can bring everything within a day.

@bartholin

Hi John -

I have known Robert McPherson for nearly 20 years, an excellent and incredible knowledge dealer, around 60% of my pieces have been acquired through him ...

Matthew Page, Brians son who know runs the business, is also very good with excellent knowledge, especially regarding early pieces ...

Both gentleman are always extremely helpful and nice to deal with ...

Ben Janssens, as mentioned by Mark@imperialfinegems, is also a very nice nice guy who always seems able to source really good, interesting pieces across a wide range of media, especially so in later Japanese wares. I know several collectors who regularly obtained pieces from him ...

Maybe a list of dealers people have had good transactions with? And a list of dealers people have issues with? It's subjective I know.
