Dear all,

working in business I see the effect the corona virus has on sales. Plants are reducing productions,  vessels are not sailing, tourism is down and so on and I wonder. These companies are all suffering right now and the end is not in sight. Interest rates are low globally. wouldn't it make sense to invest in antiques in stead of stocks or bonds ?

I would expect the markets for antiques and gold for example to go up.That would mean our treasured porcelain would get more expensive so the only ones benefitting are the big auction houses. what do you think ?

Kind regards

staartmees

Hi Startmees,

if I had some money to spare I would buy stocks now when they are cheap or wait for them to get even cheaper. Buying antiques for investment should be a small part of one’s retirement scheme I think. It’s not suitable for making quick profit. Interesting topic, what do others think about it?

I think gold is possibly the safest place to have money in a crisis, but like Birgit, if I wanted to invest in a speculative manner, I would be looking to buy stocks cheap.

More generally though, if I had money to invest, I would love to be able to buy land and houses (not in order to be a nasty landlord!).  Antiques would be nice but nothing too valuable as it would make me nervous!  I would love to "find" something valuable, but that is different.

I agree with Birgit and Julia. Stocks always bounce back. Buy when the general mood is the most pessimistic. I think antiques are always a good way to make money if you have expertise. Unless you bought Japanese porcelain in the 1980’s...

People are dying and you are talking about making money from the situation.

Appalling.

@shine

of course not. I just read an article in the news paper that people run away from stocks and go to gold, and that is what triggered my thought.

I am not the one buying gold, stocks or loads of porcelain nor do i ( try) to make money from it and that didn't even cross my mind. All newspapers talk about the economic effects and i was thinking of the effect it might have on our hobby. That's all.

Your accusation is really awful. But as they say in Holland : zoals de waard is vertrouwt hij zijn gasten. Translated that means Ill doers are ill deemers.

Kind regards

Vic, none of us will be investing and trying to make money out of misery.  This is just a casual, academic discussion.  I am sorry if it has upset you.  I am certain that was not anyone's intention.

Investments are always a gamble no matter what they are , it sounds easy but you just have to be good at identifying good value , finding an undervalued commodity and acting on it.

For instance Japanese antiques in my opinion are at an all time low compared to Chinese antiques - but will the Chinese market crash or will the Japanese market rise up ?

Also sterling silver is at an all time low compared to gold so is there future value there ?

Just try and invest in quality undervalued items !

Art should be a long term investment unless you are in the business of reselling. I'm old enough to remember the 2008 crash and the price of everything went down (except gold). Antiques took a real beating as I can personally attest. There are always buying opportunities when people are panicking. It's scary and tragic that people's lives are at stack during this particular economic slowdown.

I'm wondering if anyone has noticed if the COVID-19 calamity has had any impact on prices on ebay?

@iluvatar Not sure about antiques sellers but I sell old electronics, I've been slashing prices on some items to test the waters but few buyers.

Currency exchange might also be an opportunity to buy now. The GBP is very low now compared to the EUR so I just bought an antique sterling silver tea caddy I had been watching for a while.

Also at an auction with very good old Meissen porcelain about 2/3 of the items were unsold. I could buy a 1740 plate afterwards for a good price that I would have had no chance to get in regular bidding.

Great opportunities everywhere (though unfortunately I‘m at my financial limit now 😪)

Bonhams Edinburgh had their asian art sale a few days ago. Very lack-Lustre sale. Most items that sold barely got over the line etc. Huanghuali furniture did well. Check it out!

Here in Australia auction house leonard joel had a most recent auction featuring among other about 20 Japanese items. 80% passed in. The reserves were imo reasonable. Their weekly Thursday auction yesterday was a disastrous result for the jewelry section with about 80% passed in! Included was a 18ct yellow gold gents Rolex day-date presidential with box and papers. Estimate $12000-15000.

Unfortunately atm it is not advantageous to buy overseas using AUD. The little aussie battler has really been punished in recent days. Falling as low as 0.553 against the greenback and as low as @ €0. 52. Fluctuations of almost 10% daily atm. Sign of the times I am afraid with cautious investors going to cash etc.

@owenprescott

Was watching a Sony mz-rh1 minidisc player recorder (the last one made) on offer here in Australia. Boxed and apparantly hardly used etc. Bought a lot of money imo at $1300. I like old school things. I have about 6 minidisc player recorders that I use regularly including both the Sony mz-rh1 ( I have 2) and the Sony mz-nh1. Replacement lithium batteries are a bit of a issue for these units. Selling in excess of $100.

Let's have a joke, her majesty might say, honi soit qui mal y pense but a Texan would say, only sqares wear tamale pants.  It is the nature of markets to rise and fall, so let us all harken back to Herman Hesse and Sidhartha, be zen friends.
