Hey Guys,
So I came across something super weird today and was curious on everyone's thoughts! This painting was listed at a small Pennsylvania auction house, and it was in a standard, offline weekly catalog sale a few miles from my house. No details at all other than "Asian" (literally that was it).
I thought it was really nice, and clearly and original painting, but knew nothing about it. It sold for $800 which everyone was laughing at. Anyway I was doing research and came across this at Christie's:
It sure looks Ike the same painting to me, what do you guys think?
Not quite the $35 Yongle bowl, but pretty nice for a tiny PA farm town auction!

Looks like the same artist. The seal on the left hand side is the same. However I can't compare the calligraphy on the right hand side with the other one. You would need to post it so I can compare for you.Â
It is highly unlikely that an artist would paint two identical pieces. They would have some subtle differences between the two.Â
Are you 100% sure yours is a original and not a print?

Sorry I probably should have explained this a bit more - I saw this back in early 2019 - I and it was 100% an original painting according to the auction house. I went to put a phone bid on it, and they never got back to me and it ended up selling for $800 + whatever their BP was. The reply I got from the auction house after the sale was pretty much like "it sold for the highest we ever sold anything for, can you believe someone paid $800 for this?" I forgot about it and tried to find the artist and came across this today from a 2019 Asia Week sale.
Asuming that it was not a print, it looks to me like someone bought it at the local auction in my backyard ironically and then sold it at Christie's the same year!
Kind of bummed that I didn't roll up to the auction in person, however live and learn!
Pretty cool for an auction who was also selling tools by the box and bustles of straw I think?

The bowl..hmmm....not good. Whomever the collector's label refers to, I suspect it's a red herring. Â The design is fantasy, not finely rendered, colors are strange.

It is crazy because the same bowl sold for $17k in 2016 - I always thought it looked strange!

@jg1133 We live in a world of illusion perpetauted by the ease of online manipulation. Â If someone actually paid that amount for that bowl, then it is fine example of the proverb, 'a fool and his money are soon parted.'
Many of these auctions artificially inflate sales results to create the perception of value with the hopes on a second attempt to sell after an 'unfortunate non-payment' situation, that an unsuspecting buyer might take the prior sale amount into consideration when bidding.
Greeno107 is absolutely correct. You have to be very careful with online auctions.Â
Here is a excellent example. A jade bowl that is owned by someone I know in the USA. She had it for sale on ebay for about 40k usd. Listed as 20th century. Its still available!Â
The seller had numerous pieces allegedly from the imperial palace etc etc. The auction was in Pakistan. 😂
The auctioneers simply copied her listing and sold god knows what. If anything at all.
