This is The first piece of Cinnabar I have purchased online as everything else seems ordinary or made of resin. I paid $350 for it. Was this a bad idea?

I also just bought a cinnabar (I think) object online for the first time and have yet to get it. I am eager to see if it is real or not. In the case of your box, to me it seems like it could be a carved wooden design and then painted with lacquer and gilt, rather than being carved lacquer. If that is the case, then I would think the price you paid is much too steep. However, I could be wrong and it could be carved lacquer. Are there any areas where you can see wood under the paint, and if so can you judge how think the lacquer is? John
Dear Sally I’m not sure if this is Cinnabar. It could be a red lacquer box. Why I say this is cinnabar is not usually gilded buy red lacquer is almost always gilded. It could be Japanese also. A picture of the side of the box will help.
@johnshoe if you find your cinnabar box to not be real I have one I’m willing to trade you for one of those vases. Lol
@lotusblack It is interesting you brought up the cinnabar usually not being painted in gilt, because the one I just bought also has areas that are painted over gilt, but it's more selectively done, for highlighting purposes. It will be interesting to see. The pictures I have of it are not that good, so I'm rolling the dice. But it wasn't that expensive, so financially it was a safe bet. I'll let you guys know once I get it.
Here is a cinnabar box I’m going to sell soon the China mark is carved so it’s pretty much dated. You can see the layered cinnabar lacquer.
I was just reading about gilding on Cinnabar pieces and came across various Chinese pieces using gold in the decoration. There are apparently 3 techniques, Chinkin, qiangjin and zonsei - if I have understood correctly! I haven't been able yet to find examples of them all, but Sally and John may be able to look them up and see if they apply to their pieces.
Sorry, but suspect you have paid too much for the box, Sally. How was it described? It could be Japanese as Brian suggests, but know little about these pieces, hence the research. I did learn that the Japanese carved the wood and then lacquered the item, whereas the Chinese carved the lacquer. Maybe that is useful?
I also came across what might be an interesting article. Certainly the first few pages were interesting, but I didn't have time to read more. In case anyone wants to look, here is a link; you may have to cut and paste it as it is a pdf.

Yes, I believe air bubbles like that are a signal of resin composition rather than carved cinnabar lacquer.
