Hi Everyone,
I know this isn't about Asian antiques but I thought I'd get your opinion on this side chair I picked up today (couldn't resist and the price was right!). The seller said it was a decommissioned piece from Filoli and that it was Victorian. There seems to be a lot of wear overall and the underside reveals a history of repairs, added screws, nails, etc. If only it could talk!
Do you know antique furniture? What do you think?

I watched the Antiques Road Show from Fioli.I think it most likely Victorian or Georgian, looks a bit of the lovely mahogany veneer has come away on upper back splat and the corner blocks on the underside have come off, you may want to replace those if you will be using the chair at a desk or somewhere it will get a lot of use. Very pretty.
P.S. Nice Asian Art book collection, my husband has that same Munich Octoberfest 🍺 that used to be on our bookshelves, except I packed most of everything off the shelves so I could find and get to my books easier, except I left a chunk of the Berlin Wall on one shelf. There were about 3 of those episodes filmed at Filoli, what a beautiful place.
Lovely chair, I shall have to look up Filoli though, so I won't probably won't be much help. To me it looks at least 19th c and maybe Irish ? Would that back be described as an endless knot or a celtic knot? It is very nice, but I know so little about furniture. 😊

Yes, the episodes were good. It's a nice place to visit. We've always wanted to go on the show, so we kicked ourselves when we realized we missed our chance for a very local one. But in retrospect, that's ok because I didn't have the Imari vases yet.

When the estate became an historic trust, the furniture had been sold off so they had to buy pieces for it. Luckily, surviving members of the families that owned it donated a few pieces, too. There is an inventory number on the inside of the front rail - not sure if that is from Filoli or another collection. I don't know about the name of the design. I will have to make a visit to the library and search through Mr Chippendale's book; I'm sure that design is in there.
In looking at old video clips from Antique Roadshow about Chippendale chairs, the fanciest were either British or 1920s, it seems. Mine isn't the fanciest, but I don't think it's American, either.

@steve I received a letter from Antiques Roadshow saying, "we hope you enjoyed your tickets to our recent event," it was about 2002 or so. I never received tickets unless they were pilferred by someone at the post office sorting center or a juvenile delinquent removing mail, it was a great 😞.

The dealer yesterday was nice enough to look at photos of this chair and he thought it was Irish as well and mid-18th century.
