I often see pieces with beautiful old hardwood stands, most other times cheap stands seem to be thrown in with various vases and vessels.
My question:
Does anyone know of resources on these? Are there old rules as to what shape of stand goes with what shape of vase, which ones only work for bowls etc.?

I don't think there are any "rules" per say. What I do is go back to the oldest paintings you can find and look at the examples. Along with shape though, more importantly was the arrangement in the vase. Finding original "old" stands is very hard. Heres a couple of my older stands and photos that correspond with them. The stone carving is a Jin Dynasty carving. The other photo is a Ming example.

For objects made for the Imperial Court ie: ceramics, jades, some types of scholars objects ext, specific stands were also ordered. These were made by the best craftsman from the highest quality woods, or other materials, to fit precisely ...
From experience, I can only add that the ‘right’ stand will enhances any object place upon it, whilst the ‘wrong’ stand district from the object ...
As 33kils mentions old carvings, but especially paintings, provide wonderful examples of how, and what material type, such objects were placed upon for display ...

@ming1449 In general, would you say that the older customized stands (Ming/early Qing) tend to be more basic and streamlined in their construction, and not so creatively made as they became in later times?

I have little knowledge on these stands but understand that the early types were usually not so elaborately carved/decorate and constructed from single pieces so are rather dense/heavy ...
This is, of course, dependent on the object and how the Emperor wished it to displayed. Some stands were undoubtedly made in several sections ...
Attached images taken from two famous long hand scrolls entitled ‘Guwantu (Pictures of antiquities) dated sixth/seventh year of Yongzheng, so 1728/29 respectively, and undoubtedly commissioned by him ...
Many of the objects, in various media including bronzes 1/2, ceramics 3/4 and jades 5/6 show the various types of stands made out of matching zitan stands, turned/carved wood, gnarled root-wood, stained ivory or covered silks which these objects were placed upon. Although many are contemporary with the object, others would have been specifically ordered to fit, ancient bronzes been one example, so are much later in date ...
Images 7/8 are of a beautiful, and very rare, Yixing brushrest with a carved zitan stand, which is a quite exquisite work of art in itself!! I saw/handled this piece late October at Sotheby’s London, where it subsequently sold, Lot 35, 3 November 2021, for £600,000 hammer ...

Thank you, that brush rest is remarkable and the silk wrapped stands for the monochromes. As ever, I am amazed by how strikingly contemporary in design the cong looks. Good questions and a good answer.
