Hi,
Auction time, again. I haven't been to actually look, yet, but what does anyone think of this, please? Could it be 19tn century? It reminds me of something, but I can't remember exactly what, where or when it was. It is 12 ins high with an estimate of £100- £150.
Thanks for your help.
Julia
Beautifully made and seems to have some age. It doesn’t look Chinese to me, though what else it could be I‘m at a loss.
Birgit
Thanks, I wondered if it might be Japanese, looking at the style of the pomegranate thing on the side, then I wondered if it might be English Victorian era because of the colours but I also wondered about Persian.
I will have a look at it, tomorrow. I should at least be able to tell if it is English but looking at the base, I am not at all convinced of that.
This looks to me like chinese, with a four character mark on the side , but the characters are carved and don't show up clearly . From the base , I guess it's recent with kiln grit added to give an aged appearance. Possibly this decorative style is 'fahua ' with raised . piped decoration .

Dear Julia,
Interesting item when i first saw it something about that turquoise color made me think of 19th century British art pottery. However I think Tam is spot on. Here is a link that confirms Tams wisdom. Good luck if you decide to bid.

Thanks Tam and Michael, I didn't even think of Fahua as I only know the word but not much about it. I think that is the answer. I read up the Gotheborg info and it fits perfectly.
I will look at it, today. Maybe the characters will be clearer. You're probably right about the age Tam, but I will report back.
Thanks all for your help!
Hi Julia,
Tam seems to have solved it. At least the type. A shame if its new. If the artisans are that skilled, they should be making original items, rather than creating fakes. Maybe they would sleep better at night. Such a nice piece... If the kiln grit was faked, then the loss of enamel was also faked. I posted this little guy(5” tall) on here a while ago. This would be fahua also?

A new Fahua style vase. The mark is "Yong Le Nian Zhi", made in period of Yongle.

Thanks for the confirmation, Xin. ?
Todd, your vase looks like Japanese cloisonné, but I can see it is porcelain. I think it is called Totai or something?
Just checked some images, apparently Totai Shippo. I know little about this so maybe someone will confirm?
The closest thing I was able to find on Christie’s. It seems that turquoise is by far the favored color for fahua, and meiping the favored shape...

Thanks, Todd. It is such a nice-looking vase. I wouldn't pay anything like that for it though, knowing it is a deliberate fake. ?
Exactly Julia, if it is indeed fake, the intentions of the maker are what ruin it for me also. Totai shippo...that is it exactly, as far as I can tell from google. Another brand new term for me. Thanks!

You're very welcome, both of us learning things in one short thread! That's great!?
Just been to the auction house, looked at the vase. It is quite thinly potted but relatively heavy. The colour is not so much black as very dark aubergine. There are some little patches of glaze loss and the inside is quite messily glazed and untidily potted - there seems to be a thin line of excess clay round part of the neck, but I can't see too far down inside. The base seems possibly to have some glaze over it, not really sure.
It is certainly attractive, shame it is made to deceive - glad I asked, though, as I may have been tempted.
This is a piece of Ming Fahua,16th-16th c.
It is pottery and the glazes tend to run pleasingly.
I'm unsure what the Vase you are after is made of.
That's lovely! The vase went for £85 - or that was the last bid. Whether it actually sold, I won't find out for a day or so. Much as I like it, I didn't bid.

Calligraphy established itself as one of the major Chinese art forms during the Han dynasty (206 BCE - 220 CE), and for two millennia after, all educated men were expected to be proficient at it.
