I’ve owned this very large ancestors painting for years. Aside from the large size and numerous family members, unlike most ancestor paintings, this one appears to have family member’s names. There’s also an inscription on the back.

I’m not sure if this can actually be done, but there seems to be enough names of this family (who seems rather prominent) that with the help of some native speakers from China, the family could be identified.

If successful, I would be happy to reunite the painting with its ancestral relatives as long as the pay the shipping- but I’d need to be 100% sure they are actually related.

Anyone up for this?

Maybe if a few native speakers would post the legible names in both pinyin and regular script, along with the position on the family tree (for example- male/ 2nd row/ 3rd from the right/ pinyin name/ traditional character name)

Thoughts?

@yinchris That looks to be the right period based upon the quality of the painting.  You don't think this is Xian Feng's family, do you?

@greeno107

Not Xian Feng family, all the ladies have no names/titles, only family names. All the guys have given name, no family names. So 1852 year, March, at 小四门 (Ithink it's location).

@yinchris I thought ancestor portraits were fantasy pieces for most families, go choose a face to place on a chosen costume, like itinerant painters in Colonial America?

@greeno107 Tim, I think it is a very generous gesture and offer to unite the family tree with the correct family. As a genealogy enthusiast since the age of 10 years, I can attest to the thrill of finding information. Sharon

@yinchris  Thank you for the help you have given. If you have any ideas on how to research the names, please let me know.

@sharonp  It feels like the right thing to do, but I was hoping the numerous written names would offer an easy path to discovery...seems like this is still going to be a challenging journey.

@greeno107 At least it is an attractive object to enjoy in the meantime. I share your pain, I bought a huge Bible from a lady's online business of reuniting family items purchased at sales with descendants, hoping for a connection to a family I was researching in the nineties, well of course it turned out to contain information not related to the family I was researching, not to worry, I had heard that the giant genealogy library in Salt Lake City (I had been there years before) had a collection of old family bibles, so I boxed it up and mailed to them. Imagine my disappointment when I received it back by return post, they had photocopied the family history section to place in their online records (which is the thing that was most important), but it was an untrue genealogical rumor that they were a repository for old family bibles. I made my mistake by including a return address. I had advertised the information to send the huge Bible for free to any verified family member, no takers.
