Hi all -
Just home from viewing this, attached images of some of the pieces exhibited …

Numerous textiles and paintings, some quite extraordinary, but very little porcelain, lacquer, jades or bronzes shown …

The lightning, for obvious reasons, was rather dim in places. My apologies in advance for the image quality …

Thank you for these, Stuart. Looks like an interesting show. What was the "Hidden Century"?  The late 19th and early 20th?

That garment with the peacock decoration is so beautiful!

I recently returned from a trip where I saw a lot of amazing art and artifacts, especially in the Peabody-Essex in Salem. That Chinese house was fascinating.

@steve

Hi Steve -

The 'China's Hidden Century' title is, depending on your perception, slightly misleading as the pieces exhibited range in date from the Jiaqing Emperor so 1796, late 18thC, till the late Qing/early Republic period, around 1920's - so the 19th to early 20th centuries ...

This was a tumultuous period in Chinese history, of which a vast amount has been written ...

I believe the curators wanted to show that, although this was a very difficultand troubled period, beautiful objects could still be produced and/or ordered, both for the internal and for export markets ...

The 'peacock/flower' decorated textile was made for the Empress Dowager Ci Xi, an exceptional beautiful piece ....

@ming1449

Ah, thank you. It really was a turning point in Chinese history, wasn't it? I'm currently reading up on the early trade between the U.S. & China. Wow! Between the growing threat of opium - especially among the government bureaucrats - rising population, growing poverty, bullying and attacks from Britain & the West, civil war, still, so much was created and so many continued to prosper.

It is a shame that a lot of people in the U.S. are ignorant of world history including what happened in the 19th c.

I love the material.  Restrained elegance.   Not quite as bright as usual.
