This is described as a lacquer brush pot, it is 12 inches high which is quite tall. I am not sure what to make of it.

I believe given the size it would be a scroll holder.
Not sure about being old, but it does have some appeal.

The base mark looks to be da qing qianlong , although the fifth character seems not to be 'year'/era.
I would guess this is early C20th, possibly a china trade/export item ? it certainly seems to have some age , and is nicely decorated , I like the red bat and the use of gilt
the mauve flowers make me think it's not very old because this colour is a late C19th innovation (using modern chemical dyes) ; what is the base material to which lacquer has been applied? ; I would expect it to be papier mache or some light material , possibly bamboo.

Thanks for the help. I wondered if it might be early Republic. It felt very light, I wasn't 100% certain it was bamboo but I hadn't thought of papier maché - it could be. Unfortunately, I didn't get much time to examine it as it took ages to locate and I was easily distracted!
Mark, I think your suggestion of a scroll holder would fit better than brush pot. There were other brush pots there, but this is significantly taller.
There seems a lot of interest in this, so I doubt I will be successful but I will let you know. Thanks for the help.

I can't remember, it may have been £120 or around that mark. I can't check, because they don't display their results, but if I find out (I may buy something in the post-sale so will have to go in) I will let you know.
I think the price was a good result for the buyer, but I didn't want to go higher as I had a feeling that whoever was in the lead was pretty determined to get this.
