Hi to all
Looking at this brush pot
Its at auction asking £800 £1200
Looks like a kangxi period brush pot to me, nice white porcelain, good deep blue cobalt, and artistically drawn.
Whether it is worth £800 plus depends on identifying the calligrapher /artist's seal. I suppose if it's a known artist it could go for lots more . The mark is unusual - it means something like 'a composition about the mountain constellation' (not the right name) - presumably the constellation shown in the painting and written about in the poem.
tam
I like tam alot i agree it could go on and make a load i just think its a bit to high for a starting price
I'm going to email the auction room and ask see if they had any interest
thanks tam
I'm going to be really blunt: if you think this is Kangxi but aren't sure if it's worth £800 then you need to stop what you're doing and start buying some books / auction catalogues before you lose a lot of money.

The four-character mark means 'scholarship as high as the mountains and the Great Bear'.
I have doubts that this is an authentic Kangxi period brush pot. Personally, I wouldn't go near it.
Alan
The painting on the Sotheby's one is so much better! An interesting comparison.
Julia
Dear Tam18,
where have you seen a brushpot of the Kangxi period signed by a known artist?
I am not aware of that.
It is not necessary to be signed from a known artist; if the brushpot were Kangxi as it is trying to be, it will be enough for worth a lot, really lot more than 1,000 pounds.
Alan is right, it is a copy.
Giovanni
Yes I agree , the painting on the Sotheby's pot is vastly superior. I guess this one you posted is of recent manufacture , and a direct copy of a previously sold item. Which auction house is it ?
tam
Alan and Giovanni are without doubt correct in their respective posts.
I know of only one artist who sometimes applied his mark representing himself. His name was Tang Ying (1682 - 1756). He was the official assigned to the palace as kiln oversee during the early Qianlong period.
Otherwise they are virtually non-existent.
Makers names were virtually NEVER used before the late 19th Century.
Forum members will note the slightly different writing styles between the two examples listed. One genuine with Zhaunti style writing and the other with a much later, probably 20th century that has a slightly different writing style and thus generally easily read apocryphal marks.

I am sure you are right .. but .... in the Sotheby's catalogue , the brush pot has a seal and artist's name ,
"the calligraphy is likely have been inscribed by Xie Qing Zhu Ren as indicated by the signature and seal".

Hi Tam18, you will kindly note I used my wording carefully to include 'virtually non-existent' which means in essence that there could be examples but they would be very few indeed.
Mark
I would also like to know which auction house is offering this item and the way that it is being described as?
