What do you think of it? With that price, it seems a lot of people liked it.
I don't think it has been discussed. The first I saw of it was when I watched Peter's video. I'm not in a position to comment on it's authenticity, but I was interested to see the markings (diamond pattern) on the underside. Is that usual - I am not intending to cast any doubt, I am simply interested in whether or not that is a typical feature of bronzes this age or a less common one.

I'm researching it right now. I suspect it might be an authentic archaic bonze vase. A Shang dynasty bronze vase at Portland art museum has the diamond pattern on the underside. http://portlandartmuseum.us/mwebcgi/mweb.exe?request=record;id=11310;type=101#
The vase is archaistic - not archaic. Sorry, my mistake.
Archaistic is the better word as the eBay bronze doesn't have the same details as the Portland Museum example. To me it seems to be a Ming or later copy of an Archaic style bronze with fine and smoother lines. Amazed that someone would pay $72000 for it after seeing it sitting on the outdoor steps in the eBay photos? Wonder if the sale will be completed or if it will be relisted. If relisted, I may bid a few thousand 😀

I too was amazed at the sale price,saw it on Peter's newsletter and thought it would make maybe $6-8000,especially with the damage and repair.Perhaps the inscription has some bearing?Can you translate it George?
Wouldn't be a big surprise if it's not paid for and is related.

Well,it's certainly a precious bronze!!
It can't possibly be archaic since the the style of decoration is shang/early zhou but the technique of inlay wasn't used before latere shang. At least that's what my research showed me but please correct me if I am wrong.
Yes. Archaic in style = Archaistic. At least we got that established ...
I think the dragon handles also make it a later piece. Dragons didn't appear in that non-abstract form until at least the Song dynasty, iirc.
Both of those are far more abstract. Abstract dragons go back to the famous Hongshan jade example. Dragons with scales and horns and other details didn't appear until much later.
