Wish I could find a real bowl with this color, gouache is great stuff and mixes easily and gives you bright colors, if you mix the right ones, keeps me occupied and cheaper than therapy. Looking forward to Fall. Sharon
Hey Sharon,
Looking forward to the cooler weather too! Beautiful painting, totally going to hunt for one of those flambe blue Shiwan bowls for ya now, I feel like that glaze encompasses the strangely matte yet fluid look of the gouache paints. I used to paint, but now, peak winter time woodworking, tinkering, restoring things is my therapeutic cure for melancholy.
Cheers,
Jeremy
ps you might like this lecture on Ogata Korin, and floral paintings.... or just check out the paintings online. I just love the art of flowers myself, and have a literal flower portrait over the fireplace by Joyce Tennyson.
@jbeer2121 Thank you, I'll watch and look it up too. I was able to grow Japanese Iris, when I lived in cooler climates, many flowers do not appreciate our horrible hot and dry climate here, we will not really get Fall until Winter here, which is fine because when my mandevilla burned up, I planted cucumbers in late July to climb my trellis and it is blooming with little yellow flowers and I should be able to make cucumber sandwiches by late November (use Pepperidge Farm thin sliced bread with the crust cut off and add some garlic to the mayo and some chives), we are finally getting some rain in South Texas, which is improving everyone's mood, including the plants. Sharon
Is this the blue you had in mind?
@william Well, I do love those with sacrificial blue tones, that have some purple flash in some light, but not fine ones like your beautiful pieces William, the one I might find would likely be more along sixties hippy home kiln type tones. You are a fine, serious collector, much admired, how are things at Bayou Bend going, lots of tours again? Best, Sharon
We started touring again in September. We brought in an interesting speaker a couple of weeks ago for the Ima Hogg Ceramics Circle. She was the decorative arts curator from Mount Vernon. Her talk was about a pair of 18th century Chinese export punch bowls; one in the Mount Vernon collection, while the other is in the Navel History Museum. The bowls were originally commissioned by the early navel hero, Thomas Truxton for himself and also for President Washington in an act of gratitude & possible political patronage. Recent research has uncovered this forgotten history connecting the two punch bowls now in these different museums.
@william Happy to hear things are up and running again and sounds a great meeting, a benefit to living in a city. 😀
Hi John,
My photography must be giving the illusion that the bowls are greater in size than the reality of their physical dimensions of 6 1/2” in diameter. They are from my small collection of wares with the Jingweitang hall mark. Information regarding this hallmark has evolved over the years that I owned these items.
I am including the latest information regarding the hallmark from the Sotheby’s sale of the Cadle Family Collection of Chinese Monochromes, March 21, Lot 18.
“According to Yinliuzhai shuoci [Commentary on Porcelain from the Studio of Drinking Streams], composed by Xu Zhiheng, the Jingweitang hall mark was used by princes of the royal family during the Yongzheng and Qianlong periods. The hall name, translating to 'Made for the Hall of Veneration of Respect,' may have been used for several generations as pieces bearing this hall mark were not only produced during the Yongzheng and Qianlong periods, but also during the reigns of the Jiaqing and Daoguang Emperors. In the exhibition catalogue Rare Marks on Chinese Ceramics, Victoria and Albert Museum, London, 1998, Ming Wilson quotes Wang Qingzheng to suggest that the Jingweitang mark may have belonged to the Manchu high official Agedunbu at one point (see p. 114), while the British Museum attributes the hall mark to Li Hu (alias Duanren, style name Zhucun), a native of Cixi, a city within the sub-provincial city of Ningbo, Zhejiang province.“

The art of calligraphy - and for the ancient Chinese it certainly was an art - aimed to demonstrate superior control and skill using brush and ink. Calligraphy established itself as one of the major Chinese art forms during the Han dynasty (206 BCE - 220 CE), and for two millennia after, all educated men were expected to be proficient at it.
