Hi William, your story reminds me of my first purchases. They were from an old collector selling parts of his collection. He had bought all of his items himself in China in the 1980s with the help of a local guide. The problem is that the old man himself was convinced that what the local guide told him was true, and as he was such a friendly and serious gentleman I believed him and spent some money on a few items of his. A set of eight cups in different colors turned out not to be Qianlong but Guangxu and a really huge green bowl was of course not Han dynasty but modern. However I got a cute little Han rooster that was decribed correctly. The Chinese probably didn't want to keep it as it was from a grave. And I still have the Guangxu cups though I overpaid them.

These all look great upon first looks. Thanks for the warnings. There must be a huge market for fakes

@originalbidamountkid Thank you for starting this conversation. I'm new to collecting and look forward to learning all I can about identifying fakes. Not being able to identify a fakes sometimes keeps me from adding to my collection, I don't buy if I'm not sure and don't have time to ask about it here on this forum.

Thanks to everyone here for being so generous with your knowledge and comments.

@bartholin this was very helpful. It's especially helpful when it's explained specifically what gives it away as a fake, like when Peter pointed out the wrong shade of pink. Thanks for sharing!

@shinigami Same here. A man claimed his mother bought the collection piece by piece in China. Some items were outright fakes or modern. Spent a couple thousand

My first antique Asian item that I purchased was misidentified, but still sort of cool.

Great thread here that I feel inclined to add to.

My first purchase was a terrible one - I was 23 and just had been bitten by the Chinese porcelain bug after visiting New York and went to the MET. I saw Jim Lally and his catalogues and quickly because fascinated.

Well, along came the notorious Auctionata and, being completely uneducated and having got my first well-paying job, went for a "Wanli dragon bowl" for $1,200. So many things that I now cringe at: I was the only bidder, it is an obvious fake, and just trusting an auction house. The following is the bowl I purchased - it is still one of the first results that come up on Google:

https://alaintruong2014.wordpress.com/2014/12/07/blue-white-dragon-bowl-china-wanli-mark-and-period-1572-1620/amp/

I found it was fake in such and embarrassing way - my girlfriend (now wife) surprised me with tickets to an Antiques Roadshow taping in our state, and I took it, COMPLETELY expecting to be told it was worth more than I paid. The one and only Lark Mason looked at it, and broke the news. I ended up selling it for what it was for $300. That one hurt.

However, good came out of it as I struck up a correspondence with Lark that continues to this day - and found this forum and Peter.

So there is my first experience!

Justin

Hi Justin, I’m a bit confused. Alain Truong himself says it’s a Wanli bowl. I always thought he’s one of the great authorities.

@shinigami The funny thing is aparently he just posts/reposts items from auctions, he doesn't necessarily vouche for authenticity. Another reason I was confused.

It is not a Wanli bowl - late 19th century at best I am afraid.

Had you seen the Alain Truong entry before bidding? I always thought his pages are a bit like Bidamount, recommending good items.

Hi all -

Justin @jg1133 is quit correct, Alan Truong mearly copies/posts the auction house catalogue, museum or collection entries/descriptions - even if such are incorrectly catalogue and/or described ...

I do not know this gentleman personal, so can not comment on his level of expertise ...

Thank you Stuart, I didn't know that and will be more careful with this site in the future. The link to the Alain Truong site is here on Bidamount if you scroll a bit down:

@shinigami I actually did not, I still can't believe that I did this but I Googled "Chinese Art" or something like that and they came up.

I was so naive lol 🤣
