I'm just getting started in the wonderful area of Asian art. Since I can't translate Chinese, what is the best resource for translating Chinese inscriptions and marks, especially on non-ceramic items? Thanks for taking time to help a newbie.

A great resource for information regarding marks is Gerald Davisons book. You may be able to find it for a fairly reasonable price on the internet. A very good reference
when you say non - ceramic items do you mean paintings , or have something else in mind? Chinese calligraphy is so individual and has so many historical variants that most chinese people cannot read the inscriptions and it takes a specialist.
my wife who is chinese often can't read older more obscure characters and says that many characters she can recognise and read (ie knows the sound) have a special or elusive meaning . If you can make out the character and know either the number of strokes or which radical (root) is used in the character you can use a dictionary to look it up , but it takes forever, just to find one or two characters.
The one I use is a 'kanji and kana' dictionary I have downloaded; it is Japanese but the characters (kanji in Japanese , hanzi in Chinese, are the same) and sometimes you can infer the meaning or gist of a text from a few characters.
I don't know whether there is software that can take a cut and paste photo of an inscription and translate it

I downloaded the Pleco app hoping that it could help me decipher writings on porcelain, but it seems to work only with printed characters, not with handwritten ones. You hold the smartphone camera over the characters and it shows you the possible translations. Only of one or two characters at a time, so no translation of whole texts (or I haven't found out yet). So it's still a lot of work puzzling the meanings together.

If you live in the UK the major museums are extremely helpful if you are trying to identify the artist of a Chinese or Japanese painting, as long as you send a polite request for help along with decent quality photos.

tam18 - My reference to non-ceramic items was aimed at things like metal pieces (tea pots, incense burners) and religious objects (buddhas, travel shrines). My limited experience thus far supports your statement that it's very difficult to translate marks one symbol at a time. It seems like none of the online resources can even identify some of the symbols I'm working with.

Hi, you might want to wait for the new edition to come out. According to Davison, it will include a lot more marks, especially from the Republic period.
