I am researching a Japanese painting I have that is older and of an obscure type. If authentic it would be extremely rare.
I was able contact a leading Japanese art dealer who said it would need to be assessed in person to be authenticated and suggested I contact a few museum curators with specific relevant expertise. The problem is that those museums quite publicly say they don't do assessments or authenticate things for people.
If the leading experts won't assess anything newly discovered, how can those pieces ever get recognized and appreciated on the scale they deserve? John

I empathize with you. Identifying/verifying items can be difficult and frustrating.
My own recent rant is for Christies. I used their auction estimate request service twice now. The 1st time it took them six months to reply. I thought maybe it was an aberration. The 2nd (and last) time that I used the service it took thirteen months.

@watership That's ridiculous. I had one that took 4 or 5 months with either Christies or Sotheby's I can't remember which. The worst part about that is when after all that time I got their generic rejection email back.
I have also have had some major auction house communications about this particular painting, but the authentication challenge seemed to deter them. I find that odd given the connections they surely must have. At any rate, my sense is that they prefer to take the more obvious pieces. Anything that has some mystery and less financial certainty they seem to shy away from. So there again, just like with the museums, we have situations where certain people that could help are refusing to, and some great art is being lost in the cracks as a result.
Unless you are known to the big two (as in a buyer or seller) then sending them requests is next to useless.
All I can suggest is to contact known top-end-dealers worldwide (more than one) in the hope that one or more may give you guidance as to authentication. Unfortunately most simply rely on provenance.
Painting are a particular problem that often requires hand on rather than images.

@imperialfinegems I've been researching and would be curious who you all would consider to be the world top end dealers of Japanese art?
Steve Sly Japanese works of art in the UK springs to mind.
He's a well-known dealer and very easy to talk to.
Woolley and Wallis auctions in the UK also have a decent Japanese sector that you may wish to reach out to.
