@avatar As if it wasn't already hard enough, now we have the old vessel with newer patina added to grapple with. These people aren't making our lives very easy.
No. And I'm not sure the patina actually is artificial. I was just disappointed that in some places the patina can be scraped off using the nail of my thumb only. There are still other areas where it can't be scraped of easily.
To understand corrosion you have to have a great deal of knowledge about alloys. Ancient bronze is composed of different structures and refined with old techniques. Corrosion in one region could be much different than another. Dryness and humidity also play an important role. Almost all early Ming bronze show no corrosion. Patina is to me a different subject. This can also be caused natural or artificially. Oxidations role in corrosion and patina have to be understood scientifically. To understand if a item is authentic you would have to know where it was produced understand the method used during that time for casting perform an alloy test eliminate any unknown metals of the time. Unless you have that special gun that can tell you what percentages of alloys are in the objects like miners use on lode rock your just guessing. Just my thought
Do you have knowledge and experience on the subject of archaic bronze?
I only have a few possibly authentic pieces that have never been examined by a specialist or tested scientifically.
I have one extremely rare warring states piece bought almost twenty years ago but all I can say is that the style is absolute correct, that it is cast with the lost wax method and that the patina also appear to be authentic. It's a different entirely smooth patina though. Only a few very small areas of encrustation is seen on that piece.
I suppose various scientific which are expensive would have to be made for valid authentication.
I don’t have any experience in bronzes later than Ming. But I own a few gold mines in the US so I have a better understanding of the metals and alloys since all host rock contain different metals. Any skilled black smith craftsman can build a casting with the right tools. But no skilled craftsmen can produce the elements as mined for a region or time. This is why porcelain has changed and cobalts the material is simply mined out. Ancient bronze is no different the metal came from somewhere and was mixed according to that specific period. I would start by asking museum for there specs of curated pieces. They have all of the alloy readings. Sotheby’s uses the metal gun and zap it if the readings are close than to step 2.
Yes but they are more for family recreation because we are very environmentally friendly but I do use a dredge to vacuum the gold from the river benches. This is my 60 acres claim in Colorado
Still wow. Looks like a very nice place. Also for fishing. I really miss going hiking in nature investigating the surroundings, searching for minerals and rare plants and archeological artefacts but I'm sort of stuck in the urban live of copenhagen. I got a couple of chronical diseases about ten years ago including type 1 diabetes so I'm kind of restricted in my activities. I really have to take precautions if I travel to remote areas.
It's also one of the reasons I ended up here. It's kind of a way of escapism for me going to the library searching for antiques on the internet. I also often go hunt for neolithic flint artefacts here in Copenhagen. There are lots of them especially at construction sites where the gravel in taken in from other locations. I have literary collected entire boxes full of nice early neolithic artefacts. We don't have much gold in Denmark unfortunately but we do have amber. I used to pick it up as a kid from the fields of northern Jutland which is old seabed and with the huge price increase for amber it could definitely be worthwhile to go searching for it at the beaches. Then I could practice another of my hobbies which is fishing ...
Im horrible with bronzes. Being out here in Kansas, although right down the road from Nelson-Adkins, I wish someone somewhere would give a seminar. In person or online.
@33kills Thank you for bring up this post.
@lotusblack They have all of the alloy readings. Sotheby’s uses the metal gun and zap it if the readings are close than to step 2.
Brain, what do you mean? Is there a machine can do this test? what is the step 2? Thanks.

@yinchris/Yin Hall - What is that gun they use? Can you explain how it works? i have a few archaic bronze in my private collection that could well be worth a few million dollars - each. It sound very interesting it that analyse the alloy without expensive lab tests.
@avatar it shows the metals in the bronze with a percentage those readings are compared with known examples. The gun is $40000
I understand. But can you explain how it works? Do you know what it is called? Could you eventually post a link with one of these guns for sale?
