What do you think of this Guanyin? She has 18 arms and is 51cm (20") high. The seller says she was bought 1975 in Bangkok's chinatown. He dates her to c. 1970. Due to the fragility he can't ship her, but I could easily pick her up. The price is €650, can propably be negotiated. I like the Guanyin, though the stand looks a bit garish. Might put a cloth around it. Does that statue have any value at all or is it just a tourist item?
Birgit
I think parts of it look to be quite nicely done (her clothes for example) and I find it a bit hard to see her as a tourist item for the reason you mentioned: the fragility of the arms. Imagine trying to squeeze her into your suitcase!
However, there is something rather garish about it - there is a lack of harmony in the colour scheme. I probably wouldn't buy it, certainly not for that much. I think a big reason why not, is simply that I don't like the lower half of the base. I find that burgundy unpleasant and distracting, my eyes keep getting drawn to it!
Don't let me put you off, though. 😊
Just seen the one Martin posted, I feel that one is nicer - a bit?
Yes, I do. I just looked again and the base just pulls my eyes towards it. If you feel like that, it may be hard to live with unless it looks better in real life. You could ask the seller to take a photo under different lighting conditions and see if that alters things.
hi, so I did some googling in Chinese. and I think I found someone in Jing De zhen selling this now. looks to be very similar to yours. The pants, the lotus, the seat... all too similar to be a coincidence.
Maybe I should emphasis on that they are bulk selling this. the website is saying things like "wholesale" and "7 day return policy" etc.
@shinigami You've probably already looked it up, but the mark on the bottom appears to be the artist's name 曾山東. Searching for that shows some comparable pieces.
I can't speak to authenticity or value, but the fact that none of the arms are broken makes me believe that maybe Guanyin does have divine powers of protection.
Hi Birgit,
In my opinion the seller is being very optimistic.
The price of €650 is about $1000 Australian dollars or about $800 usd. It's akin to a retail price.
Personally I think it's way over priced for such an item. It could be from 1975 or perhaps later. It's very difficult to pin down as these are still in production.
The overall quality is in my opinion gaudy. I don't like the gold paint. If it was from the Republic period then I would definitely consider it. But as you know it's not. I would not buy it. But that's my opinion.
I also think if it was in a local auction it would struggle to get past €100. I do see these from time to time. Was actually offered one the other day in jade.
Mark
@imperialfinegems I don't think it's from 1975 solely because it's being wholesaled now. hard to imagine the same company has been in business for that many years. culture revolution ended in 1976
@nyccat Thanks a lot, I was googling a bit but didn’t find that site. So it looks rather like a modern Guanyin. They have some nice items, I especially like the relaxed looking seated Guanyin, but unfortunately many Chinese shopping sites are closed to us in the West.
Birgit
@imperialfinegems and Julia: you’re right, I better pass this one. It’s really helpful to get others‘ opinions.
Birgit
@shinigami you are welcome. my theory is someone who has a shop in Chinatown searched online and bought some to put in their chinatown shop to resell. so I googled 陶瓷千手观音(tao ci qian shou guan yin) = "ceramic thousand hand guanyin" and found this site selling it.
Hi Birgit,
Sorry I am a bit late to the party. In your first post the photo shows cigarette lighters these lighters are about 8cm tall in life, the statue must be huge or is just a strange trick of perspective. I agree with Mark as you may know we live in the same city and I also have seen very similar items being offered in Asian import shops at much lower prices that 650 euros. Although not quite as large as I imagine the figure to be based on the photo.
Michael
