During one of my walks through the city today I came across an antique store that had some rather nice pieces of amber for sale and very reasonable priced also. If resold online these could probably bring a decent profit.
Normally there are many Chinese buyers in town and the many specialized amber shops are doing very well because the prices have been going up. But now with the pandemic there are not many and smaller non-specialized shops have to rely on more common people coming by.
I like amber myself have owned many nice pieces, some of which I found myself in my childhood. I wish I had bought some of the really big pieces when they were still affordable. Today big pieces can command rather high prices.
I remember an amber shop in Rothenburg, Germany in 1985, are you speaking about Baltic amber or old Chinese amber beads, which can go for big prices in auction catalogues. I have been in the recreated amber room of the Catherine Palace at Pushkin, Russia, the Nazis took the original but no one knows what happened to it. I too like amber as my Grandmother did as well, lots of old ladies wore amber brooches in the nineteen-fifties. The old Chinese examples in the catalogues look like butterscotch amber and red amber. Modern stuff has often been monkeyed with, heard about Mexican green amber where they throw bits of biological material, bugs, leafs into reconstituted or fake resin amber. Sharon
I assume the pieces in the shop are Baltic amber. They have a large lightly polished chunk of amber weighting more than 300 gram priced at 2500 Danish kroner and a necklace with 4-5 cm beads of really fine quality amber for 1500 kroner.
I wish I bought some antique Chinese amber pieces before the amber prices exploded. At that time you could still find them for small money at eBay. I think I will go for another coffee and a trip to the shop to take a look. They also have had some interesting Chinese antiques but these are sold all ready.
The pieces in the shop were all gone all ready unfortunately.
I had no idea that amber had resurrected itself from the 70's.

@imperialfinegems You can buy a replica sword from The Last Kingdom, which is supposed to return for season 5 on Netflix late 2021, but I do not know if it has real Baltic amber in the hilt or resin. I like how Vikings featured iolite (the viking navigation stone) in a few episodes, you really can find the sun on an overcast day with iolite because I tried it.

That's very interesting. I have never seen that series.
Here in Victoria, Australia you cannot legally buy even a replica sword (edged metal) without a weapons license. Other states yes but here no.

@imperialfinegems It is another series that features Alfred the Great, once again like the Vikings, it gets the history muddled but we enjoyed it.
