Hello:
I should have added that everyone did rather well on this mystery item. First Supioduo recognized that this figure was not that of a woman, but thought that it was a man. However, it appears that no one can ever now assign a gender to Lan Caihe so I suppose that the correct answer was that this is/was a person of neither gender but of both. Giovanni recognized that this was an iconographic Chinese figure and Craig realized that this was a famous person from Chinese history. Apparently, Lan Caihe is the least regarded of the Immortals possibly because of his/her multiple eccentricities. I find the latter, fascinating, however. He/she started out as an itinerant or almost a hobo in Western terminology and was later elevated to the status of an Immortal because of his/her chartitable activities.
We also had a good discussion of sancai versus susancai courtesy of Julia and learned something about biscuit from Michael and Giovanni!
Errol
I learn't about Biscuit or Bisque from Brett. So credit there also.
Brettm and Michael are one and the same unless I'm missing something here.
That was really interesting, thank you Erroll. I have enjoyed learning from everyone's contributions. ?
Dear Erroll,
I think that your friend is right, but there are some small doubts. Lan Caihe is usually represented as a lady or a young man, and there is no explication for the bird on his/her head, I have never seen that.
BTW, really interesting, thank you.
Giovanni
Hello Giovanni:
I agree with you. I think the second figure is more typical of Lan Caihe. He/she has that distinctive and rather odd hairstyle. I don't know how to characterize it better than saying there is something similar to a "bun" on either side. No other character in Chinese mythology has a similar hairstyle. However, the one essential item, namely the fruit or flower basket is missing in the second figure and was presumably broken off and lost at some point. The second figure though is presented as you say as a young man with somewhat feminine features and attire. I have not been able to find any other Lan Caihe figure with a bird's nest on his/her head. However, the first figure has the other characteristics of Lan Caihe namely a somewhat masculine face, female attire and the indispensable fruit basket. As you point out too, the first figure is older and possibly a Kangxi piece and that could account for some of the differences. Also, if one reads about Lan Caihe and his alleged exploits and eccentricities, he/she is possibly the only character in Chinese mythology who would do something as crazy as wearing a bird's nest on his/her head!
Regards,
Errol
Dear Erroll,
he/she is not the only one, there are characters who can have even more birds.?
This is the detail of the wife of Guo Ziyi, on a Yongzheng jar of mine.
Giovanni
Dear Giovanni:
Thank you - that is a lot of birds. It seems a rather inconvenient way to dress one's hair! Do you know whether the birds were dead and stuffed or alive and chirping?
Regards,
Errol
