So I am wondering if anyone has ever looked at Jadeite vs Nephrite under a microscope. I sent these photos to a friend of mine who is a Gemologist ( he saw it in person a while ago, maybe a year and a half, but due to covid cant meet again...)and he believes this tray is jadeite, I personally would love to know if there is a reference online or a good book that shows a study or examples of side by side of the two.
These were shot under 40x and one under 100x magnification of a Jade tray.
The only thing I have that is definitely jadeite wont fit under my scope, so I am stuck with just one thing to compare.
Any ideas, or thoughts would be appreciated, and any source for magnified images would also be helpful ( if you just google them I cannot trust 90% of the images are accurate).
Cheers,
Jeremy
Hi Jeremy,
The waxy luster makes it look more like nephrite--jadeite looks more glassy. Also, jadeite is very difficult to scratch, so the relatively deep scratches in the corners suggest it isn't jadeite.
With respect to microscopy, both nephrite and jadeite are fibrous minerals, but the fibers are commonly more pronounced in jadeite (this doesn't have to be true--think if imperial jade). Nephrite frequently looks massive--think of good muttonfat and pale green jade carvings. If this is jade (you are sure it isn't bowenite? Those deep scratches bother me), then I think it is nephrite.

Hi Jeremy,
Imo this tray is not jadeite jade. It could be nephrite but the images are not good. I don't like the white blotchy parts. Highly probable to be something other than jade.
Put simply the following applies when trying to determine if it's nephrite or jadeite.
Nephrite is very limited in colours. Whereas Jadeite has many more. Nephrite has a greasy Lustre with a even surface.
Jadeite has a uneven surface when examined under a loupe. Similar in parts to the surface of the moon.
If you examine both jadeite and nephrite using a loupe you will quickly see the difference.
The above is a simplified explanation without going into too much technical details. It can be difficult to determine said by images. However first look at the colour range. This will in most cases tell you whether it could or could not be.
Regards,
Mark
Hello Mark
I have been taking some close up photographs of my Sang Yang Kai Tai and your description of how the surface of nephrite jade should look has confused me. Below is a close up photograph,
And another one,
The surface doesn't seem very even in my small carving, is this due to when it was carved or the particular jade?
Kind regards,
Jeremy
My description was in general terms my friend.
Your piece has natural flaws. This will give that uneven look to it. Also it's a result of tooling in other parts.
Mark
Apart from the flaws, is the surface due to the way in which it was polished?
Peter has mentioned in one of his videos that the surface on certain jade carving has a look like an orange skin, but I am not sure if he meant that this was on Qing or earlier carvings.
Kind regards,
Jeremy
When you are examining jades and trying to determine whether it's jade or jadeite the first thing to look for is the colour and translucency. Nephrite is very limited.
Jadeite jade has a different surface to nephrite. But it must be viewed using a 20x loupe. Otherwise you won't see it. It's not obvious when either viewing with your eyes or taking images.
If you have a few pieces of each please examine them in detail. You will see the difference.
Mark
Thank you Mark. Are there any reference photographs that show how the polishing changed the surface finish in different periods?
Kind regards,
Jeremy
Roger Keverne 'JADE' has some excellent pictures. Shows in good details jades right through the ages.
Jessica Rawson book on jades is also excellent. Used by museums and auction houses. Any books by Sam Bernstein are well worth reading.
Unfortunately I don't know of any reference material that deals exclusively with polishing techniques.
It's available via eBay/other for about $50+.
I would highly recommend that you visit the auction rooms such as christies, sotheby's and bonhams when they have their asian art auctions. Often they have various jades on offer. That way you can get the feel that you won't get from reading books or visiting museums.
Mark
Thank Mark for your help.
In reference to books about Chinese jade, please can I ask if you have 'Chinese Jades from the Han to the Ch'ing' by J.C.Y.Watt?
Kind regards,
Jeremy
Hi Jeremy,
No I don't have that one. I have heard of it but never seen a copy yet.
I mainly use the Jessica Rawson book for reference.
Mark
