You see something new all the time. I came across this this week from a seller we watch for in the UK. A very curious looking pot with nice decorations, script, figures and good quality mounts. At a first glance I thought it might be a lime pot, perhaps it is, but the second small hole on the top seems odd. The entire thing only measures around 6 inches tall.
I love odd things like this.
Any thoughts on it?

I've not seen anything like it before that I can recall, though in the eBay listing, the four-character mark on the base, shi de ding zhi, may be a 19th century one.

The work looks ok as to age to me, I sent a message to the seller to see if he could shed any light on it. If he replies, I'll post it here. I love odd ball items. It has quite a few watchers for so early on, 44 of them. It might do very well.

May I ask what a lime pot would be for, please? And "to carry lime" is not the answer I am looking for. 🙂 Why would they want to carry lime?

Hi all.
It's an opium smoking device (essentially a bong) and it's missing some of the metal components from the small and large holes. The opium would go over the larger hole and you would inhale through a metal pipe extending from the smaller hole.
They were made for the Vietnamese / S.E Asian market

The four-character mark on the base is fully compatible with pieces made for the Sino-Vietnamese market. So James has indeed nailed it.

Although they are often called an opium pipe here (and could possibly be used for that - I couldn't tell you), I think in Vietnam they are just water pipes, identical system to a shisha or hookah pipe.
They are indeed usually made from rebuilt Chinese late 19thC vases. This one above in peter's first post is probably the nicest one I have seen.
