This week, we included in the News-Letter a pretty dandy 1650 t0 1750 scholars table water dropper. It was a very good early one and was Korean, the seller had it listed as Chinese. I've always like Korean blue and white and this one had indications of lots of use over the years, which makes it ( to me anyway) much more interesting. I checked back today and it was languishing at around $30. So I dropped a modest bid and went out to do yard work. (spring is slowly arriving here n the rock) and I got it ..very pleased.
It will clean up just fine.

Hello,Peter
nice little waterdrooper wasn't Korean part of chine at that time period or under
there rule. John
During the Ming Dynasty Korea was viewed as a dependent state of China as they adopted so many Chinese cultural elements. . But by the end of the Ming and into the early Qing they became very isolationist towards China as the Manchu's had tried to take over control of the country during the first quarter (roughly) of the 17th C. THe Chinese felt I think somewhat entitled as they had helped repel the Japanese who invaded Korea earlier. A rough history.
The water dropper was made during this era of isolationism but bears decidedly Chinese aspects, which makes it I think all the more interesting. Many Koreans by this time had incorporated culturally many of the key elements of the literati made so popular during the Ming dynasties influence.

Thank you peter I had read where Japan invaded Korea in the 15th century that when Japan
Had taken Korean porcelain maker back to Japan to teach them them Chinese porcelain making
process. John
That's true they did that, they abducted potters after the invasion. For a time Korea suffered some real turmoil as a result of interventions by both China and Japan. They eventually became pretty isolationist while they rebuilt their largely agrarian economy. I've always like their porcelain and pottery. Not much of it turns up though compared to China and Japan.

That's a great catch Peter, congrats!
It's surprising that Korean influence in Japan has always been understated, especially when considering that Korean immigrants and descendents have been producing pottery there since almost two thousand years ago (with sue ware). Even now, a lot of the current producers in Japan have ancestral links to Korea that go back one or two hundred years. I'm guessing that when Hideyoshi brought Korean potters back to Japan in the medieval period, he was forcefully continuing a known precendant of having Koreans bring about innovation in the industry.
What an interesting item Peter. The garlic form, strictly a Korean form? I don’t recal seeing it in any Chinese wares. China, Japan and SE Asia history is a convoluted story, throw in colonization and western interactions during late Ming and Qing dynasties and it becomes a real mess in my mind. Kudos to those who can keep track of it all beyond generalizations.
