Got these lovely Imari examples recently. I think the melon jar missing lid is 19th C. and the Bronze mounted piece looks 18th C., at least to me. I am also wondering if the ormalu mounting was done in Japan of Europe? The beed work around the neck of the vase is confusing. Need some opinions to weigh in. Thanks, and Blessings to all. JT

@loveli4236  That tall one is interesting. I don't know if I have seen that shape before.

Hi Jamie,

Great haul!

The shape of the first piece is very strange. Is it possibly a composite piece, two vases or vessels attached together somehow by that beaded bronze collar? I ask because the decoration is subtly different: (i) lappets outlined in red on the top and blue on the bottom, (ii) different shape to the lappets, and (iii) color of the blue is different between the top and bottom, not from the same pot of cobalt. The bottom half looks Chinese to me. Not sure on the top.

I think the second piece might be Japanese. The flower decoration looks like the Toyotomi clan mon.

Cheers,

Will

I agree with Will. The tall one is 2 separate pieces, the decoration and blue are different. I think the lower part may be older. I also wondered about the origin; the parts could be from different places which might explain the differences, but what is that red on the base?  Certainly the beads hide a join. If it were a break, it is unlikely the top part would be undamaged as it looks to be.

The  big Japanese vase looks to be late Meiji, maybe around 1900?

Awsome! You guys have great eyes. It never occurred to me that it may have been two vases joined, but that is exactly what it appears to be. I have never held these pieces yet. I purchased these two based solely on the pictures you are all currently viewing. The bid was 120.00 and I thought the large vase kind of looked Chinese by the decoration on the lower half, but the auction house had it listed as Japanese, so? At any rate, I felt the larger piece was worth at least 150 to me by itself, so, I bid 150 and won the lot for 135.00. With buyers premium, I have around 150 in both pieces. I will pick the items won up later today and then we will be better able to assess the large vase. I have quite a few questions concerning it. JT

Hello, Jamie

Julia is right the tall vase shows a crack coming from where they are put to getter. Blue is not Japanese on this piece. John

Kangxi porcelain in Imari palette then? If so, damage and modification will hold it back from its potenial, but still a great buy for 150. JT
